    Dedication

    To my soul mate, Lisa-Marie

Thank you for your never ending love and support and your eternal, boundless belief in me.

    Acknowledgements

I would like to thank all of my family, those near and far, for their love, dedication and support. My parents, Liz and Brian, who never stopped encouraging me to reach for my dreams, regardless of how impossible they seemed. My English Literature tutors at the Open University who encouraged me to open Pandora’s box. Margaret Connell at the Liverpool Lantern Theatre for support and showcasing my work.

Lisa-Marie, for the endless encouragement, enthusiasm and for putting up with my constant rambling about this manuscript, (and others) but most of all, for taking this whole crazy journey through life with me.

Puig, Bradbury, Beckett, Hemmingway, Fulci, Raimi, Franco, Noe, Tarantino, Besson, King, Law, Poliakoff, Tennessee, Anton and Pinter; You have all inspired me and this piece. Without you, there would be… nothing.

To those too numerous to mention, thank you for your patience, your guidance, your ears for listening and eyes for reading my work and offering support, and your honest criticism when needed.

Finally, thank you for purchasing this book.

    Preface

Some Girls Wander was conceived and written during the two years between losing both of my parents. On reflection, it appears that this script could be viewed as a thing of loss – the loss of identity; place in society and of use or purpose to anyone. But on the surface, the loss of family is key to this work.

Life is a collection of moments, knitted together and we find ourselves weaving our way through to achieve what is mostly expected of us. We have dreams and goals and I hope that for the majority of the readers of this piece, that your desires all come true. What we never expect is the unexpected: A curve ball to knock us off track, for we dream in positives and suspect that luck is always on our side.

This piece will hopefully bring a glimmer of just how good most of us have it and will hopefully prompt some thought around just how easy it is to lose everything. One action, maybe out of our control and how that single action affects us all. The action provides incident and it is how we deal with these incidents when they are upon us – a test of character maybe?

Tests are one thing and from my own experience, it is important to hold on to what you have left when all else has gone. Live for those around you and remember those that you have lost and be grateful for the good times with them.

If you are reading this Preface prior to the script, stop now and start your adventure on the streets of Liverpool. For those who have returned from St. John’s Gardens, I have one thing to add. We all lose limbs as we travel through space and time, but it is those that we connect with, other limbless, blind or broken, that help to make us, and them, whole

    Introduction

Homelessness. Just think about that word for one minute.

Still here? Thought about it? I mean, really thought about it? To be without home. That’s no home at all. No roof, no bed, no TV, no internet, no warmth, no safety, no security. No late night snack from the fridge. No lazy Sunday morning in bed. Now just think about that again.

OK, so this sounds terrifying. We are a consumer society in a mostly stable world. It doesn’t cross many people’s minds just how tough it could be to be
