Prologue: The Diamond

Miner Oliver White wanted to be rich. A friend had told him to mine in a legendary mine near a volcano. Rumor has it, a diamond a foot and a half tall was in the mine. White set out to find it.

White sat in the copilot’s seat in the helicopter. You know, the pilot said, most people come here, but never come back.

The pilot landed the helicopter in a clearing in the woods, and White stumbled out. He grabbed his pick and walked into the darkness. He flipped his light on, and gasped.

A huge cave-in blocked his way. His instincts told him to cancel the trip, but he ignored it. He pried a rock away and was nearly blinded.

A diamond bigger than him was embedded in the wall ready to cut, and orange light was shining on it. Then he was aware of a cylinder bumping in his pocket.
