    The gun still smoldered in Carter’s hand.

    He wheeled the car around the divider, skirting the driver-side door against a blade of concrete, slicing sparks across night. He drove off Main Street and onto an off-road that climbed into Bucker’s Tears Mountain. The wheel writhed against his hands until he realized how fast he was going, and he eased into a steady climb and breathed to slow his heart.

    He followed the road into a copse, rolled to a stop, killed the ignition.

    Sirens spiraled below.

    Motorcycles growled ahead of them, and Carter gripped the .45 until sweat trickled down his wrist.

    He took another breath, exhaled, and waited until his heartbeat was no longer a stampede of thunder. Sirens grew distant, the motorcycles fainter still, and he turned and looked back at the duffel bag and the edges of hundred
