Poetry of the Soul - Gregg Upshaw (gshaw57)

    Upshaw

    A Father’s Tribute

    In memory

    Of

    Johnnie C Upshaw Jr.

    This is for the fathers

Who has been the mainstay in our lives

Who have brought joy, pride, and love

    Into our lives-

    This is for the grandfathers

    Whose cherish memories

    Will not be forgotten-

    This for the men

Who understood the meaning of life

                  And

That life is eternal and everlasting-

    This is for the men

    Who brought liberation

    Of thought into our lives

    Who understood laughter

As the antidote to enjoyment of life-

For this is for the men

    Who can graciously cry

                  And

    Yet be strong within themselves-

For this is for you dad

    For within you

    All these attributes

    Were portrayed-

This is for all the fathers

             who share

    That common bond

                 Of life

For in life there is no death

As in death there is no

                 End

    Only ahigher level of existence-

    For I know now

    That life is only

    A moment in time-

    This is for you

    Dad

Whose life has not yet been fulfilled

    Your light shines on eternally-

    See you soon!

    A NATION OF POVERTY

    Four o’clock in the morning-

    She rises for work-

    Coffee brewing, Folgers, I presume-

    The shower calls her name—

Steam rising—the resemblance of a sauna-

    Water hitting the ceramic floor-

    Like tiny pebbles of sand—

She finds the shower very soothing—very cleansing-

As the water starts to dissipate-

    Now her day begins—

    She is dress now-

She begins her trek for work-

    She is cold and shivering

As she awaits her public transportation—

There is no other transportation that awaits her-

    Her privacy is on hold-

For the public transportation yields none-

She must either wait for her arrival to work—or back home

    To regain her privacy—

For she represents—the macroscopic view of poverty-

The middle class absorb into the ‘Have and Have-not’s-

    For she represents

                   A nation of Poverty—

    Abyss has engulfed me!

    Darkness has overshadowed me!

The burden of life has overwhelmed
