About this ebook

Kay G. Melton was a true survivor. Despite her many trials, tribulations, obstacles, and health issues, she always pressed on, placed her trust in God, and believed in her purpose in life. In her posthumous memoir, Kay—with help from her daughter and other family members—shares her personal story of how she overcame life’s greatest battles with the hope of inspiring others to do the same. While offering a glimpse into her unique journey and experiences as a teacher, artist, wife, and mother of two, Kay and her family members help illustrate her steadfast faith in God as she became a spiritual role model for others and relied on prayer and her church family to guide her through difficult times. Through all her challenges, Kay never wavered from her faith and her determination to let God determine her destiny. In this inspirational memoir, a godly woman and her family share her personal, faith-filled journey as she overcame adversity through determination and grace and ultimately left a wonderful legacy.

    Foreword

So many times, we physicians think of ourselves as ministering to others, as being teachers and counselors. Yet I wish to tell you of how Kay Melton ministered to me, taught me, and was my counselor, though not known.

Intellectually, if one is observant, one cannot help but know that doctors do not save lives. We physicians do not extend life—at best, we can only relieve pain and suffering; at worst, we are no help at all. All those things that man would attribute to physicians remain and always shall remain in the purview of God. Kay’s life was the perfect illustration of this for me.

Those things that she appeared to have suffered prior to my having known her—I’ve come to understand that she suffered not at all. She experienced things that she chose not to share, as if they had been burdens in any way, and no one would have know any of this to have met her. Meeting her was an expression of the joy and peace that she experienced through the love of her family and their growth together. It was by the grace of God, persistence, and Kay’s presence that we discovered the tumor in the first place. After designing a surgical treatment plan, then came the task of picking a medical oncologist. A plan was devised that was on the cutting edge of medical pharmacology, and humanly speaking, this medical oncologist, who came with impeccable credentials, seemed to be the perfect choice, although many were considered. For some reason, however, I felt the oncologist’s spirit did not connect well with Kay, and it was only after recurrence and subsequent remission that I understood two things: 1) that God does not make decisions like man does, and 2) we, in conjunction with His will, are in control of the outcome.
