Chapter One: Plumber’s Delight
It was only the first day into the New Year and disaster struck. It had been a cold night and I had left the heating on full blast over the night. I woke to a warm apartment. I got out of bed and just in boxer I put on a pair of my Christmas white tube socks and happily walked in to kitchen. I knew the stone tiled floor would be cold, but with such a warm house I did not mind staying in just my boxers and a pair of tube socks.
Boxers and white tube socks! And no one to show off my gym fit body. New years’ has always been a blow out in my eyes. Plenty of eye candy from the party the night before but I was not interested, especially with the drunken levels most reach by close of midnight.
I took one step into the kitchen from a small step from the living room and met a soggy floor. I guessed correctly straight away the dishwasher must have broken and flooded the floor. I went over to the dish washer opened the door only to be let a gush of water out of the sides. Quickly I shut the door. Standing in an inch of water across the sunken kitchen floor I went over to the kitchen phone and called my friend Dave to come over and help me sort it out. We were friends from school and he was a plumber. Funny how parents want you to be doctors and lawyers and really all you want as good friends who are trust worthy plumbers, electricians and the like.
I called Dave and explained the problem as I was getting towels from the side room. It was more of kitchenette, catch all room come laundry room. I dropped towels on the floor that I had waiting to go for a wash load. Dave explained on the phone as I carried on dropping towels to soak up the water that I was not the first to ring. Many people with burst or flooded rooms and water related issues. A freezing new years’ night meant he was a popular man. He said he would come over or send his new plumbers' mate over to help out. They were splitting up due to so much work and he said he was confident with his work.
I begged, Na Dave, can’t you come and sort it for me.
He replied along the lines he would do what he could and in the mean time I should mop up the water and turn the water off under the kitchen sink in case of more flooding. I hung up and did just that. I did not bother getting dressed. I just soaked up the water with the towels not even getting out of my wet socks. The house was warm from the heating and a cooling wet floor was bizarrely refreshing. I kept ringing the towels in the sink draining the water down the sink. I opened the dishwasher gently to let the water flow gently onto the pile of towels I put by the sides of the machine.
I did not notice the time but I had spent nearly hour catching all the water from the floor and rinsing it down the drain. Nearly all the floor was mopped up, the floor still had film of water on it and my wet socks were not helping. As I took stock of the drying kitchen I began picking up all the wet towels and dumping them into the kitchen sink and dipping water over the floor in the process. Trying to mop up so much water this way was a little bit of a dripping challenge. The door bell rang and I knew it would be Dave, I was not expecting anyone else.
I dashed to the front door, realising my wet socks were making the carpet in the hall wet. I unlatched the front door, and spun round and rushing back to the kitchen floor shouting out to Dave ‘come in, shut the door behind you Dave', or something to that effect. As I got back to the kitchen I picked up the two towels left at the step of the kitchen and cupping the dripping water falling from the towels I quickly dropped them into the sink. I stood over the sink finishing off ringing the towels out of most of the water. I could feel I had dripped the kitchen water over my chest and down my stomach and over my boxers. They were light blue and the wet had changed the colour to darker blue showing the water stains. But it was only Dave coming in so I was not bothered and knew he would not care either.
Hi, I am James,
the man said, or should I say young man said. He had closed the front door and walked in following me. He stood at the kitchen doorway. He could not have been much older than early to mid 20s. Young and fresh faced. I was not that much older than that, but 30 fast approached.
Dave said you had a water problem and asked me to come over, I had to drive past here to get to my first job so thought I would pop in here first.
I was startled by someone else just walking into my place and the fact I was nearly naked, but with a water crisis I felt somewhat unbothered as much as I should, albeit a little uncomfortable.
Yeah I was kind of expecting Dave?
I stated rhetorically. I was aware that water had run down my chest. The cold water had made my chest tight and my nipples erect. They did not stand out much but you could make out the goose bumps around my nipples. My shorts were patched with water marks. And my feet still had wet socks on. If the situation was different you would think I was about to stand-in for an underwear shoot, I should get some clothes on, I was expecting Dave, sorry mate
, I said as blushed somewhat.
Na, don’t worry, you’re good eye candy, some of the people answer doors with open bathrobes. You see it all in this business. Dave said I was to treat you like a king and do whatever you ask, your his best mate from school or something he said, so I guess I am here to service ya,
he said in real east end London accent. He smirked as he looked me up and down. He had a deep voice for someone looking so fresh faced. James noticed my wet socks and added, Your socks look soaked; you should take ‘em off mate, that's if you okay with going down to just boxers!
I do not know what possessed me, I was in socks and boxers, but I did just that, taking my socks off one at time and dropping the wet socks in my sink behind me.
James added I need you to help me move the dishwasher so I can get to the back without scratching the floor.
I took one corner and James took the other and we pulled the machine out, enough for James to get a look around the back. He saw the back of the machine and holding one corner kneeled down on his right knee and planted his left trainer flat on the ground. He wore a green t-shirt grey warm woollen track suit bottoms. He had brilliant white trainers, probably as a Christmas present. His track suit rode up as he bent his knee and I saw he was bare footed in the trainers, no socks. His ankles twisted as he moved his arm around the back of the machine showing off his bony ankle. I
