    For Loxley:

You’re three weeks from your 1st birthday, and this being my first children’s book, I figured it should be for you. I’m trying very hard to make my shoes really big and hard to fill. In my opinion, a person’s goal in life should be to become more successful than their parents. Between love, being a good parent, and being successful, my parents (your grandparents) have set the bar pretty high. I hope that for however long I am around, I continue to raise that bar. With any luck I will teach you how to catch said bar and far surpass where I have left it. Also, if you could stop pooping in your pants…that would be great.

    Chapter One

Huh, thought that was a closet…

Sometimes when kids are young they have to move. Moving can be hard, but it can also be exciting. Yesterday, Judy and her family moved. Judy is nine years old and has no other siblings. Being the only child, like moving, can be hard. You see, siblings tend to be your first best friends, even though sometimes they can also be gigantic pains in the butt. Being an only child does have its advantages though. All the ice cream belongs to Judy, she doesn’t have to share her toys, and she even has her own bathroom! Which means she never has to hurry so someone else can use it. Plus, she gets to watch what she wants on the cartoon channel. Sometimes she wishes she had a sister or even a brother. It would be like having a sleepover all the time. But then again, sometimes in life you just have to play the hand you are dealt and Judy is okay with being the only kid in the house.

It’s summertime in this new town and Judy will have the next few months to seek out and make new friends. Last night they pulled up to their new home well after dark so Judy didn’t really have time to explore her new home, or even get much of a glimpse of her new neighborhood. The one thing she did notice was that all the houses on this particular street were arranged in a circle, and to her great delight, in the middle of this circle was a really big park. It was dark out but Judy just knew she saw a jungle gym towering over the large brick wall that surrounded the park. Finding this jungle gym was now at the top of her priority list. She knew if she found it and climbed to the top she would be able to see the whole town from there. Maybe even her old house, her old town, and her old friends.

She will miss her friends, and her school, and her town. But, her parents are doing what’s best for the family. Her new friends, and new school, and new town will be just as good as her old ones, at least that’s what Mama keeps saying. Judy didn’t want to move, but she’s just a kid. She knows that her parents are much wiser and have had a lot more experiences than her, which means they are probably right. Unfortunately this means they are probably right about what time she needs to be in bed, and also about when she has to brush her teeth, and about not allowing her to have a pet llama.
