    The Prelude

My heart beats, my art speaks,

black tires match the dark streets.

The white broken lines reflect the clouds from heaven

and the sidewalk is the gray area where my soles meet

My soul was white until I walked these streets,

    until my heart beat.

    Born into hard beats

of pain and joy, was once a white seed

hit the streets and became a black boy.

Colors, both extremes of the spectrum.

    Therefore, my art speaks.

A black hole and white teeth.

You changed my life Angela Thomas

You changed my life, Angela Thomas.

As you stood there in front

of a smoky green chalk board

    and professed your curiosity.

    In that dingy classroom

    with wooden carved desks that,

    much like those compliments,

    were uncomfortable to sit in.

You put me in my place,

    a place I've never been.

    Cushioned by your smile

    I leaned forward feeling an

    odd sensation in my stomach

like when your mother is talking

    to your teacher about you

as you sit next her on

    Parent - Teacher conference day

    and mentions your name

    so you stop playing "racecar

    stuntman" with your Hot Wheels

and the both of you share a look.

Maybe it was just the desk

    pressing against me but still

    the parallel imprint across

my abdomen is where I placed your words.

    Those lines, quickly faded

within a few days and so did our

chances of taking that relationship any further.

    Yet in that moment

    I experienced how poetry

    can bring smiles that cushion

    the desks in
