    1: Introduction

Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. It was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on February 4, 2019, without any prior announcement or marketing. The gameplay of Apex fuses elements from a variety of video games, including Respawn's own Titanfall series, battle royale games, class-based shooters, and those with evolving narratives. Approximately sixty players are pitted against each other on an island in squads of three, with one player controlling where their squad lands. The squads then must scavenge for weapons and other resources to fight other squads, during which the play area gradually constricts in size until one squad remains, thus ending the match. The game also features care packages and the ability to revive your teammates within a certain amount of time. Communication with team members can be done through voice chat or through a ping system, allowing teammates to mark supplies, locations, and enemies with ease. The game features nine heroes to choose from (though three of them are locked by default), and features a microtransaction system for cosmetic items. The concept for the game came to fruition during the development of a new Titanfall game, after EA's acquisition of Respawn in 2017. The sudden success of the battle royale genre prompted the developers to create one of their own that incorporates elements of the series, in addition to the concepts seen in games throughout the past decade. Following its release, the developers announced plans for cross-platform play, as well as ports for iOS, Android, and the Nintendo Switch, in the future. Apex Legends received very positive reviews from critics, who praised its gameplay, progression system, and fusion of elements from various genres. Some considered it a worthy competitor to Fortnite Battle Royale, a similar game that had gained massive popularity in the previous year. The game surpassed over 25 million players by the end of its first week, and 50 million within its first month.

    2: Competitive Setup Overview

This is a topic that is touched on all over the internet, but it may be new for some of you so I wanted to provide some quick OPINIONS on the following.

    Hardware

    Monitor

Assuming that the rest of your setup can handle higher frame rates, having a 144 - 240hz monitor is the best investment you can make that will directly correlate with better play. Higher monitor refresh rates will lower reaction times and smooth movement which results in easier aim tracking. Some people may think that 60hz is enough, but they are wrong. I recently made the jump from 144hz to 240hz and I don’t regret it at all. 144hz is probably enough for most people though, as even good PCs can have hard time maintaining higher frame rates in battle royale games.

    Mouse / Keyboard / Mousepad

This is obviously a no brainer for most. This section is more focused on people who want some cheap options for good value / performance gear. The following could be considered a very good setup for not too much money.

SteelSeries QCK Mouse Pad is a classic that many professionals use, it is also pretty cheap for the size. I recommend going as big as your desk can handle: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KJ5V8TF/

Logitech G203. I think Logitech is killing the mouse game right now. I personally use a Logitech G305 with a AAA lithium battery. The G203 is a great budget option though

Keyboard: My old recommendation would be the Gigabyte K83 red (cherry MX red switch minimalist keyboard for only 40$). Unfortunately it seems to no longer be carried. In general I would shoot for Cherry keys, although many other cheaper switches are comparable now.

Here is an example of a better cheaper switch that would at least give you an idea of what type of mechanical keyboard you want long term when you are ready to drop a ~100$ keyboard investment.

(I do recommend tenkeyless boards to give you more room for your mousepad/desk, also Cherry MX Red or Silver switches as they are the standard others are measured)
