    Preface

    Welcome

I welcome all readers to Pieces of Life. But, I would like to list a special note of appreciation to the Theatrical Artist. One of the greatest feelings in the world is to see something I have written come alive. To have an Actor bring my written characters to reality. To have a Producer say allow me to breathe air into your creation. To have a Director say I see a vision in your words. We are all artist. Each Artist will bring his or her own creative genious to what is written on a flimsy sheet of paper. To all I say, Welcome!

    Thank you!

    The Actor’s exit

He said, My love, I’m afraid we have reached the end of our scene. The actual beginning started long, long ago on a stage far, far away. Our love has been an act played out in life. A small scene that grew and grew as the music swelled to a climatic, dramatic crescendo.

He told me, It’s not that I didn’t love you. I just couldn’t give you the love you needed. I couldn’t act out the role in your life you needed me to play. The love I did have for you was lost somewhere in the script you wrote for me.

He goes on and says, What started out as an act of love between us became an extremely beautiful yet passionate lie.

As the man I loved exited my life the curtains fell and my heart faded to black.

    Little mad men

It was 1993 and my first time working for a hotel. When the New York City hotel owner hired me to manage the overnight shift he reminded me that there would not be much activity at those hours. He gave me two major pieces of advice. Since I had to perform the nightly audit his first piece of advice was to double- and triple-check my accounting. His second was to always, always, always respond to room #619. He instructed me to lock the register, set the phones to voicemail, lock the lobby doors, go to that room, and do whatever #619 asked. I promised him I would.

I had been there almost two weeks and never heard from room # 619. One night about 2am I got a phone call. It was room #619. Her name was Ms. Reno. It was an elderly voice in a frantic whisper. Please, I need your help. They’re in my room. I asked, Who is in your room? She stated, The Little Mad Men. She went on to say they were running all over her room, yelling at her, calling her names, and stomping hard on the floor. They are going to wake up the other tenants.

I followed all the steps the owner had instructed and went directly to room #619. I could not help but notice how quiet her hallway floor was as I approached her door. I knocked and listened for sounds of corruption. There was only silence. She asked, Who is there? I told her it was the Front Desk Manager. She slightly opened the door to confirm it was me. Once confirmed she unchained and opened the door to let me in.

I recognized her immediately. Though we were never introduced I had seen her in the lobby several times. She was always happy with a glowing smile for everyone. She was a little lady in her late 70s to early 80s standing about five feet tall. She had snow white hair and
