    Advice

Can I come? Richard asked in a mocking tone of voice while looking straight at Steve.

Carl, sitting with Richard and Steve at one of the cafe's sidewalk tables and idly watching the passers-by, turned, glanced at both of them, and asked, Who's going where? What's going on?

Richard turned toward Carl, but kept his eyes on Steve, when he answered, Steve has a lunch date tomorrow with Candice Howard.

So? Carl shrugged. And who's Candice Howard?

She works in the media center, the tall, leggy blonde, Richard answered.

Smiles a lot? Narrow hips, big breasts? Carl inquired further.

That's the one, Richard confirmed, and nodded.

But why in the world do you want to go with him? You have the hots for her too? Or what? He twisted, and smiled at them both.

    Steve laughed.

I don't care a fig about her, Richard insisted, too warmly, his voice rising in intensity.

Then why do you want to go to lunch with them? Carl asked. He was frowning now, but his eyes were crinkled into a mischievous smile.

I don't want to go to lunch with them, Richard flatly declared. I just think he should admit that he's doing something he won't tell Lisa about.

    Who's Lisa? Carl asked.

    My wife, Steve answered.

I see, Carl said slowly. Looking at Steve, he continued, And Rich thinks you have more than a friendly interest in this Candice?

He does, Richard offered at once, and he shouldn't be going to lunch with her.

Do you? Carl asked. Sorry for being nosy, but .... He spread his arms, palms open, and shrugged.

If you're asking if I'd like to crawl into bed with her, I would, but I think Rich would like to also. He just won't admit it. I think most guys would.

I would! I admit it, Richard blurted. But you're missing my point. I'm not ashamed of being attracted to a beautiful woman; it's a natural reaction. But that's exactly why I'd never have lunch with her. When Pru asks how my day was, or who I ate lunch with, I don't want to lie and I don't want to tell her I had lunch with Candice. Or any other beautiful woman, for that matter.

Richard glared in turn at both Steve and Carl, but while Steve sat expressionless, Carl started laughing.

And what's so funny? Richard demanded.

Carl, still grinning, said, with an inflected voice, Pru dear, I had lunch today with another woman, but it's okay because she was UGLY! Carl nearly choked on his last word, he was laughing so hard. He slapped the table and grabbed his side, bending over as his eyes began to tear.

Ha, ha, Richard said in a flat, even tone, his face as expressionless as Steve's had been, but you know that's not what I meant.

Rich, my friend, Carl replied, I'm going to tell you something about your wife that you seem not to know. I don't think she'd care a fig whether you had lunch with another woman, even a beautiful one. She's too sure of herself, and of you.

Well, she probably wouldn't, Richard agreed, but she'd want to know about Candice, and ... and, well, I don't want to talk to her about a woman that I find so ... so attractive.

Carl stared at him, and then smiled broadly and shook his head. You're bloody frigging crazy.

I am not, Richard replied at once, too loudly, while sitting on the edge of his chair, arms
