Dedicated to My Love, My Helper
Chapter One
Present Day: Beginning
Sitting with my back to the wall facing the door I wait. Knowing that the door will swing open any minute. I take a deep breath to keep my attention sharp. I pull one of my Newports out and light it up. I must remain calm. The noise that surrounds me is defining. My internal battle to snap is slowly bending toward the wrong way. There is no normal life for someone like me. These areas are just too much for my anxiety. I’d love to just let the whole place burn. How can I keep from getting stir crazy while I wait? I check my phone again for the time. Ugh, why was I this early again?
Squeak. My eye’s fly to the new customer in the café. Could it be? I settle to the beautiful women that walks in with her shoulder long hair down floating around as she pulls her young blonde-haired boy. Damn. Her honeyed brown eyes search the place to find me in the back. How could I be so lucky to have her attention? As she walks in my direction, I see her light blue tank top slightly wiggle over her large chest. When she stops to talk to her son, a look of exhaustion overtakes her eyes he must be acting up today. I look at her from my seat she clearly doesn’t understand how good she looks in those shorts showing off her long-tattooed legs. Her hair sways as she continues to have a soft, stern conversation with the rambunctious boy. Her small lips clearly curve with every word she whispers to him. Her thick thighs jiggle as she starts to take steps back to me. She hides her beautiful brown eyes behind those mute brown glasses. She smiles slightly embarrassed by the seen that occurred with her son.
I’m sorry we took so long to get here.
Her voice is sweet and pleading as she looks at the table. Ya haven’t had to wait long I hope?
No, I got here not too long ago. In fact, I think you maybe early Charlie.
I say trying to hide my earlier irritation. Please have a seat. How are you doing today Oliver?
Otay…
He speaks in an overly pouting voice.
Charlie shakes her head with a slight annoyance on her face. God, she can’t hide emotions well. She quickly slips a casual smile on her face. Despite knowing she’s having a hard time with Oliver lately I wonder how shes been holding up. Charlie, how are you doing? I was surprised that you wanted to meet out and about today.
I pause as a look of concern overcast on those shining brown eyes. I feel this isn’t just a social visit today?
Well…
She seems to fidget with her fingers has her left leg bounce in an annoying manner. Despite all the correct training and manners, she can’t seem to dispel this bad habit. I think there is someone following me lately and I feel like I’m being watched in our house. I don’t really feel comfortable going home right now.
Oliver seems bored as he looks at the menu and hums a common tune slightly off key and flat. I have been going to work and all… but I think there is someone watching me at home. Then when I stayed at Jillian’s house for a couple nights, I started seeing a car in a lot of the same places. A white four door sedan.
She leans towards me and whispers, I think he’s back.
The panic displays on her darken face.
Whose back?
I start thinking of a million ways I could solve this issue. Well, I could look into it for you. Also, if you need a new place to stay one of my rentals is vacate and you can go there for a while.
I’d love to say you could stay with me, but I know this broken woman won’t survive my world. I couldn’t put Oliver in danger either. My life is not the life to share with children. I paused looking at her, she doesn’t look to be sleeping. Let me get you some food while we are here.
I honestly can’t put ya out like that.
She looks down so unsure of herself. I’m sorry I brought this up anyways it’s not yar problem.
Are those tears in her eyes?
I want FOOD!
Oliver exclaims over our conversation. He doesn’t seem to notice how rough his mother is doing. His pure excitement makes me chuckle. A soft expression over comes Charlie’s face looking at her beloved son.
Well, Oliver what would you like to eat?
Chicken! Cheeseburger! Fries! Oh, oh, oh, oh, ice creammmmmmmmm!
Smirking I turn towards Charlie. And for the lady?
No thank ya, I’m really not hungry. Oliver ya don’t need all that food. Ya can have fries and one meat.
When is the last time you ate Charlie?
My voice turning stern.
But I hungry and want ALL!
I don’t know, I’m seriously not hungry. Oliver please just one.
Irritation floats through.
I reach out and place a hand on her’s. You need to eat something. What about a thing of mashed potatoes and gravy? Chicken gravy, right?
I start to get out of the chair.
I will go get Oliver’s food, Ray.
No. Let me treat you both.
