    December 5 th, 1806


    Y ou’re up to something, you little beast.

    How dare you! I’m being a perfect lady. Katherine Sellars put on her most innocent face as she looked at her older sister. I was just going to take a trip to the dress shop to pick up my Christmas frock. Nothing more.

    Please don’t take this the wrong way, my darling Kitten, but I don’t believe you. Of Katherine’s two older sisters, Emma was the one who took the most pleasure in calling her the nickname her eldest sister had coined. The last time you went out you claimed you were going to the book shop and it took you three hours to come back. Emma smirked at her and raised an eyebrow expectantly.

    As if you’re one to talk! With an unladylike snort, Katherine turned on her heel and flounced down the stairs. She stomped past her mother, who put her hands on her hips and shook her head.

    Don’t spend half the day at the dress shop! Your sister and her family are coming tonight and I don’t want you missing dinner, she called to her daughter as she grabbed her coat from the rack by the door and put it on over her ice-blue winter dress.

    Yes, of course, Mother, Katherine said irritably, then opened the door and went out into the frigid air on her own.

    Their driver and small carriage were waiting for her outside and she got into the cab as fast as she could without catching her skirt in the door. It was much colder than it had been the year before and she didn’t much care for it. As she liked to tell her parents, she was delicate and couldn’t be bothered with manual labor or the winter. There was only one thing that could get her out of the warmth of her home, and it was waiting for her at the dress shop.

    She tucked her hands into her ermine muff as she rode, humming a bright tune in anticipation. She’d been keeping her secret for an entire long year but if everything went to plan, she wouldn’t have to take
