    Morro Bay, California, 1948

    Henry, her little black man-dog, wriggled against widow Catherine Mayfield’s leg, setting his head on her lap with a contented sigh.  It looked like he was ready for adventure, too.

    If only it wasn’t so cold!

    Catherine adjusted the wool blanket over her knees, thinking that men had it lucky they could wear pants.  Even with her herringbone wrap coat hitting just below her knees, the sea wind blew right up her legs.  She carefully tucked the blanket around Henry, leaving only his head out.

    She hoped Victor hurried with that coffee.

    Ever since the movie crew had arrived to film in Morro Bay, everyone was excited at the idea of real live Hollywood stars wandering their streets.  Today, the crew was filming at Atascadero Beach.  It would make a lovely backdrop with the dome-shaped Morro Rock behind the actors. The parking lot at the base of Morro Rock was filled with cars, trucks, and the three silver movie trailers.  She thought the trailers looked like rocket ships right out of the movie serials, blasting off to a faraway place.  She doubted if any such thing would be possible, though it was
