    The rain turned to needles of ice, clicking on the roof of the car. Though it was the middle of the day, the headlights barely penetrated the gloom that shrouded the mountaintop. 

    Cassie Evans adjusted her seatbelt over her samba red jacket, glad her husband Tate was driving and not her.  He was better at winter driving than she was, since he was from Wisconsin.  But the combination of ice and winding mountain roads drew made him grip the minivan's steering wheel a little tighter.

    Sorry, he said, risking a glance at her, a smile ghosting his lips.  I thought we could outrun the storm.
