    Chapter 1

Adam Lewis made sure he looked very sharp this morning, at least from the waist up! Today he was going to be interviewed via video-chat with a vlogger named Ace-the-Face.

Adam’s deceased agency partner, Jack Tuner, had been accused of ‘couch practices’ and assaulting his young male clients. Ten years ago Adam had to live through that misery, even getting shot at by the nasty man before he turned the gun on himself.

A nosy reporter, Garth Ross, decided a tell-all book was in order since the whole ‘Me-Too’ movement had swept the nation. On release of that horrible book, Adam’s agency was under fire and he had lost fifty percent of his stable of stars.

Dreading this, unnerved, Adam fussed with his hair and shaved his jaw of the dark stubble, and then chose a nice cotton dress shirt.

His husband, attorney Jack Larsen, also wearing business attire, knotted his necktie in the full-length mirror in their walk-in closet.

Adam held his stomach and sat on the foot of their bed in the mansion they resided in, in Paradise, California.

Jack put his glasses on and read his phone, then his attention turned towards Adam. Do you even know this guy?

No. One of the casting agents I work with, Buzzy, recommended him. He said the guy’s got millions of followers and maybe I won’t be crucified. Adam’s hands were clammy.

Jack sat beside him on the bed, shoulder to shoulder. Just tell the truth. Even if you get criticized, you can never be accused of hiding what happened.

Fuck. Adam rubbed his stomach again.

Noise from down the hallway drew their attention.

He and Jack lived with Mark Antonious Richfield in his thirteen-bedroom mansion. Mark had been the Nation’s Top Male Model for five years. For almost a decade Mark had also worked fulltime with his ex-husband, Steven Jay Miller at an advertising firm. Now both Steve and Mark ran Mark’s deceased father’s garment manufacturing firm, Richfield-Miller International.

Mark was taking care of his two young sons in the nursery down the hallway.

Adam checked the time and said, Let me get this over with.

Do you want me to sit with you?

No. Adam shook his head. I need privacy, not a lawyer.

Jack pecked him on the lips and they stood from the bed and left their bedroom.

Adam jogged past the nursery, hearing Mark with Blake Hughes, a retired fireman who was now Mark’s nanny, helping with the two boys.

Adam avoided them and trotted down the grand mahogany staircase to the marble foyer. The scent of food cooking was in the air as he made his way closer to the kitchen.

Their chef, Sierra, was preparing breakfast for the group. Good morning, she said, smiling.

Good morning, Sierra. Adam approached the espresso-maker.

Allow me. Sierra worked on making a double espresso for him.

Adam stood near the nook, a bench seating area with a large picture window overlooking the entire back of the estate; the outdoor pool and slide, the basketball and tennis courts, the stable, and the meadow beyond to their heli-stop.

    Sierra handed him his coffee.

Thanks. Adam rose up and walked the length of the long hallway, glancing into bedrooms. On his left was a large white bedroom suite; Steve and his Swedish transgender wife, Tadzio Andresen-Miller’s bedroom.

The handsome former cop turned CEO wore a suit and tie and held his phone, texting. His wife was in Los Angeles at the moment, staying with Mark’s eldest son, actor Alexander Richfield.

Adam continued heading to where his computer was located. At this end of the mansion were the study, library, pool and spa, and an entertainment room with games and a huge flat-screen TV in front of rows of cushioned theater chairs.

He entered the study and set his hot espresso on a cup warmer then rolled his swivel chair closer. He cleared his throat, logged onto the blog website, and clicked a video link to the vlogger.

He was acknowledged and the screen opened to the young man of color, who had a huge influence on the youth, rap and hip-hop music, as well as many Hollywood and sports celebrities. Adam had done a little research on this young man, and he was one of the bigger names in the ‘V-blogs’ or video blogging world.

    Hi, Adam. Hang on.

Adam ran his hand over his dark hair and sipped his coffee as he waited. Ace was a handsome man with a tightly cropped afro and a perfectly groomed beard.

Before the show went live, Ace explained his format, Right. I’m going to give you an intro, then discuss the book, then, I’ll get into our interview questions. So, all in all, around an hour.

Yes. Good. Adam felt like he was going on trial.

I want you to know, I’m going to be direct.

Yes. Adam was warned by his friend Buzzy. Jack’s advice of honesty kept ringing in his head like a bell.

Okay, let me get into the intro. Standby to go live.

Adam sipped the strong espresso and hoped that Mark and Blake kept Jacob and Isaac away from the study for an hour. He didn’t really need babies screaming while he did this. The study did not have a door.

Hip-hop music played with a prerecorded introduction for Ace’s program.

Adam set his cup aside, cleared his throat and got ready, peeking at the smaller video image of himself in the corner. He blurred the background because behind him was a wall of Mark’s modeling photos.

Jack brought him a glass of ice water, kissed his cheek, and left.

Hello, fam and peeps out there… Ace said, "Today we have a special guest to discuss a new book release on the market. Hide and Seek; The Secret Life of Jack Turner. Adam Lewis, Mr Turner’s former associate, has granted us an exclusive interview today."

Adam tried not to be terrified because he wasn’t an actor or an orator. He was a talent agent, a behind-the-scenes guy.

And this may be his toughest job yet.

Adam Lewis is giving our viewers his first insights into the tell-all book that is sweeping the nation. We have an exclusive with him today and are anxious to get this live-streaming interview started. So…Hello, Adam.

Hi. Adam smiled and waved at the computer’s camera lens.

Why don’t we begin with how you met Mr Turner in the first place?

Yes. Adam cleared his throat and said, Well, around fifteen years ago…

    ~

Jack returned to the kitchen’s nook. Mark had his youngest son Jacob on his lap and fed him formula from his bottle. Jacob Bentley Richfield was the product of an illicit affair between Mark, and his former, married, fiancée Sharon Tice-Hill.

Jacob was nine-months-old with bright blue eyes and a fuzzy head of blond hair.

Blake helped Isaac, who was nineteen-months-old, sit in his highchair.

Jack gestured down the hallway. Keep the boys quiet for an hour. Adam’s doing his live interview in the study.

Mark set the empty formula bottle down and adjusted Jacob on his lap. Yes. We need to be quiet for him.

Blake said, We’ll stay away from that end of the mansion for now.

Blake’s husband, Hunter Rasmussen, entered the kitchen. Hunter was now working with Butte County’s fire service, training firefighters after being an LA Fireman for nearly fifteen years.

Steve showed up at the nook’s bench as well and peered outside at the heli-stop. Steve asked his former husband, Are you coming to work?

No. Mark wasn’t wearing his suit and tie, so he obviously wasn’t working. Mark and Steve co-owned Mark’s deceased father’s garment manufacturing company, Richfield-Miller International. It had offices in Sacramento, where the three of them worked, and in Paris, London, and New York.

Whilst Stan is away, Steven, I will remain here. Mark shifted Jacob on his lap as Sierra gave him a bowl of food for Jacob; very soft mashed oatmeal and bananas in milk.

Jack joined Mark at the nook since the seating area could hold six comfortably.

Mark’s young second husband, Stan Charles Richfield, was a model for Dangereux Obsession Cologne, the company that created Mark’s trademark fragrances. The handsome six-foot-four twenty-seven-year-old, hazel-eyed stud was on a tour with another model, Joe Scarbino, who also worked as a Los Angeles police officer.

The two had left California yesterday for a four-day tour of eight cities to promote the cologne.

Blake kept an eye on Isaac who gobbled his bowl of oatmeal, raisins, and bananas happily.

Jack sat back as Sierra served him a heaping plateful of scrambled eggs, bacon, and her homemade bread, toasted. Thank you.

No problem. She smiled and handed out plates to all the hungry men.

Daddy? Isaac asked, Where’s Daddy Stan?

Daddy Stan is working. Mark wiped Jacob’s mouth with a napkin and cleaned his hands.

Wooking… Isaac drank his milk by himself.

Jack gazed outside as Andrew, their groom, brought the four horses outside of the barn and into the paddock.

    We widing hosses? Isaac asked.

    No. Perhaps we can swim.

Wimm. Isaac nodded and tried to wipe his hands on his napkin.

Blake set his fork down and helped him out.

Jack gazed at Steve as he ate his breakfast. The handsome CEO was attending a premiere this Saturday evening with his actress wife in Hollywood. But, this was the end for Tadzio and Steve.

Jack was aware Steve was going to tell Tadzio he wanted a divorce. As he ate quietly, Jack knew things were going to be rocky once more in this household until the dust settled.

He met Mark’s stare over Jacob’s fuzzy head and saw the worry in the gorgeous model’s green eyes.

    ~

So, you claim you had no idea?

Adam was trying not to sweat profusely. This was murder.

I did not. If I knew? Adam made a noise in his throat. I would have absolutely come forward about it. Adam sipped the cooling coffee and continued speaking since Ace was giving him an opportunity to come clean. Look…I was in my twenties. I was very young and Jack Turner intimidated me. I kept to myself, did my work and avoided him.

Did any of the young men contact you about his behavior?

No. Adam shook his head. He kept his focus on Ace’s dark eyes. Adam tried to pretend he and Ace were chatting alone, and battled not to think about the millions of his fans that may be listening…live. Ace was based out of New York City, so his fans were wide awake and had already begun their day.

I had a desk outside his office. I rarely step foot inside it, and never when he engaged a client. Adam tried to remain cool but inside he was dying. There were times that our clients would appear dazed when they emerged, but, really, Ace, I never believed anything as miserable as couch practices were going on. On my life, Adam held up his hand in an oath, I did not know and if I had, yes, of course I would have said something.

According to a police report, Ace read from a piece of paper in his hand, Turner shot a gun at you and Logan Naveah, hitting Logan in the upper chest.

Yes. That’s correct. Logan came forward first with the allegations. I accompanied him to see his lawyer, etcetera. Turner drove into the parking lot where we were, leaned out of his Caddy and shot at us.

    That must have been terrifying.

It was. Uh…a friend and former police officer, Steve Miller, rammed Turner’s car and then drew down on him, ordering him to drop the gun. It was then, Turner swallowed the barrel.

    Wow. Ace expressed his disgust.

The whole era was ugly back then. Ace…I’m a gay man. A married gay man, and the thought of Turner harming the very clients we represented makes me so ill…

Yes. I can see how emotional this interview has been for you.

Adam exhaled loudly. Maybe I could have been more perceptive. Maybe I could have learned what was going on if someone had said something. But, Ace? No one did. I wish they had.

It’s tough for men to admit they’ve been sexually assaulted. No doubt, they were not only traumatized but worried they’d never find work.

Yes. Adam nodded. I did my best for the clients. I tried to avoid Turner myself. He was very nasty. He mentally abused me for years. He may never have physically touched me, but he screwed with my head. Make no mistake. Once Logan came out against him, Turner became unhinged and terrified both of us. And, obviously was capable of murder.

Wow. I don’t think anyone had any idea what you went through, Adam. It’s a shame Garth Ross didn’t include your experiences with the rest of the men who had been terrorized.

Ya know? He never even asked me my side of the story. But, I assumed this was written to highlight the sexual assaults and not what he had done to me. Which is fine. The young men Turner abused should have gotten priority over me. Adam peeked at the time and was growing exhausted.

One more question for you before we wrap up, Ace said, reading from notes, Have you read the book?

Adam winced. No. I can’t. Just the thought of what he did… Adam shook his head. But, saying that, I’m here for any of those men that he did assault. If they are out of work now, if they need representation, I’m here. I will take them on as clients, no questions asked.

I can imagine your agency has felt the damage as well.

It has. Adam shrugged. Look, I get it. Guilt by association. I do understand the kneejerk reaction is to punish me, punish my associates Natalie Cushman and Logan Naveah. But, let me just repeat to your fans…Ace? We’re here. We can help anyone who needs us. And…I’m sorry. Although I had no clue what was going on, and was very young and intimidated by Turner, I am very sorry. I simply did not know.

Ace smiled at him for the first time since the interview began. I can see your sincerity, Adam. And I do understand how hard it must have been for you back then. We all struggle when we first start out. Men like Turner use that to their advantage.

Yes. That’s exactly what he did.

I also understand you have some tragic personal history of your own, Adam.

Even after Adam finished his coffee, his throat felt very dry. He drank the water Jack had brought to the study.

Ace continued, When you were a boy living in Vancouver Canada, you witnessed your parents’ double homicide? Is that true?

I didn’t witness it. I was thirteen. I climbed out of the window of my bedroom when it occurred. Adam had no idea why Ace had found this information important, but maybe it helped create some compassion for him on a human level.

    That must have been horrible.

It was. My sister ended up killing herself soon after. So…what can ya do?

    Did they catch the killer?

Yes. A police detective friend of mine reopened the cold case a year or so ago. Detective Jeff Chandler from the LAPD, and his connection in Vancouver, did end up locating DNA evidence. So, yes, I did finally get justice.

Wow, that’s an amazing story. I’m glad you found closure.

    Thank you.

Ace began to wrap his show, And that’s all for today. Thank you, Adam Lewis, for giving our viewers an exclusive interview. Next week…we have another live show for you…

Adam waited for his signal and then waved into the camera. Thanks. Bye, all. He logged off and sat still, spent. He guzzled the remaining water left in the glass.

    ~

Steve and Jack walked across the meadow in the warm August morning. The air smelled like burning wood as fires ignited all around California.

The helicopter appeared over the trees.

    Steve felt
