    Chapter 1

The noise of joy and laughter surrounded Mark Antonious Richfield. But…

    Mark didn’t hear it.

He was lost in his head.

Miss Tice! Are you seducing me?’

    Mark?

Snapping out of his daydream, Mark turned to look at Steve. The open-planned home of his son, Alexander Mark Richfield and Lt Billy Sharpe, his husband, was crowded with family and friends. A celebration. Mark’s newborn son, Isaac Milton Richfield or ‘Zak’, had his bris and christening at the same time.

Tired? His ex-husband and business partner, Steven Jay Miller entered the bedroom Mark was hiding in.

I just need a moment. Mark touched a mobile that hung over the portable crib.

We’ll head back to Paradise tomorrow. Steve caressed Mark’s shoulder.

Yes. Mark was sick of Los Angeles, sick of coming back here, sick of sleeping in guest beds.

Steve gave him a soft smile and left the room, leaving the door partway open.

Do you mind if I suck your dick, Mr. Richfield?’

Will it get me the account?’

    What?’

Nothing. If you insist, Ms. Tice.’

    Ohmygod, you’re enormous.’

Is that why you’re doing this?’

    Huh?’

Nothing. Get on with it before someone calls for an elevator repairman.’

    I will.’

At that memory, one that was nearly a decade old, Mark rubbed his face in exhaustion. He sat on the bed that he and his new husband, Stan Charles Richfield, were sharing at the moment…in the house his son Alex lived in…Mark picked up his childhood teddy bear, Praline, which for some odd reason, Steve had packed, and taken with him. Mark held Praline on his lap and stared into space.

    ~

Stan cradled his newborn son and searched for Mark in the crowded living room. His parents; Ali and Michael Bergman, his sister Leslie, and two of her law school friends, Maxine and Manuela, had flown from New York to Los Angeles, for both a funeral and a bris.

Isaac, or ‘Zak’ as Stan called him, began to fuss and cry from his ordeal. I need to put him down for a nap. He’s really uncomfortable and tired.

The fabulous Swedish, blond, runway model, Tadzio Andresen-Miller, Steve’s new husband, caressed Zak’s head gently. Iz too much for baby. Yes, he need to sleep.

Stan carried his little one to the guestroom he and Mark were sharing. When he spotted Mark alone, sitting on the bed holding his teddy bear, Stan became curious. He placed Zak in his portable crib and spun the mobile. Zak whimpered and made sad noises as Stan rubbed his belly, trying to get Zak to sleep.

He glanced behind him at Mark. Is the noise too much for you?

    Hmm? Mark looked very tired.

Are you okay? Stan continued to caress Zak, as Zak dozed off.

Yes. Mark set the bear in the crib, in the corner above Zak’s head. Praline will watch over him.

Stan smiled. That’s nice. He drew Mark against him with his free arm. So, tomorrow morning, we’re driving north?

Yes. The earlier the better. Mark gazed down at his new son.

Mom and Dad are flying out early too. So, that works fine.

Susan may come with us. Mark held onto Stan as Zak fell to sleep under Stan’s gentle caresses.

Okay. Stan left Zak alone and hugged Mark. Soon we’ll be home.

Yes. Soon. Mark rocked in Stan’s embrace.

    ~

Alex rubbed his hands together anxiously as he sat next to his LAPD SWAT lieutenant husband on their bed in a house overflowing with people.

Billy leaned over his own lap, his elbows on his knees, and gazed at him. So? You were a day late? I thought you were coming home yesterday.

No flights. Alex dragged his long, brown hair back from his face. He had finally shaved his beard off. Since the film he had been shooting in the Bahamas was a pirate movie, he hadn’t shaven in weeks. How long is everyone staying? Alex indicated the noise coming from the living room.

If you’re tired, just lock the door and take a nap. Billy stood from the bed.

Alex gazed at his husband’s smart casual attire, his black slacks and gray cotton dress shirt. His big lieutenant filled out the shirt, making it tight over the biceps and shoulders. He stared at him, admiring him.

Billy was twenty years his senior, and lately, they’d had a rocky relationship.

Did you even talk to your dad? Meet Zak? Billy asked, looking irritated.

I just walked in. Alex narrowed his eyes. Why? Do you think I care about that kid?

He’s your brother. Billy crossed his arms. And, my godson.

What? Alex expressed his disbelief. You’re that kid’s godparent?

    Me and Susan. Yes.

Alex glared at him. Gee, Billy. If you wait fifteen years you can date him.

Billy’s body language changed dramatically. He loomed menacingly over Alex. Alex almost expected to get backhanded by the macho cop. After a sneer of contempt, Billy spoke very quietly, but very potently, Unless you get checked out by the clinic, you and I aren’t touching each other. Got it?

Alex winced and his cocky façade crumbled. He had sex with two extras from the film while in the Bahamas, without protection.

Billy exited the room after that stern warning.

Alex glanced at the luggage he’d left on the floor, and flopped back on the bed, staring at the ceiling.

    ~

Jack Larsen had enough of the gathering. He and his husband Adam Lewis had just returned from a very short visit to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to see his mom. She had been recently widowed and found a boyfriend within months of his dad’s death.

This last visit, meeting that man and his family, well, Jack had his fill of loud family events. The noise level in the house was giving him another headache.

As he considered leaving, he noticed the two detectives from LAPD, Jeff Chandler and Mickey Stanton, appeared to be wearing thin as well.

Adam whispered to Jack, Can we leave?

Yes. Let me just find Mark. Jack squeezed Adam’s shoulder and looked for the top model. He spotted Stan and got his attention. Where’s Mark? We’re leaving.

He’s with Zak in the bedroom. Stan thumbed behind him.

When are you guys heading to Paradise? Jack asked.

    Early tomorrow.

Okay. I may come up next weekend to ride Shadow.

Cool. Stan smiled and was called over by his mother, who was chatting with the rabbi who had helped with the bris.

Jack paused to gather his thoughts and then walked down the hallway. He paused at a door and listened, then opened it.

Mark was sitting on the bed, staring at the portable crib his son was sleeping in.

Jack sat beside him, shoulder to shoulder. Adam and I are taking off.

    Okay, Jackie, Mark whispered.

Uh…I most likely will be at your place this coming weekend to ride Shadow.

Good. Mark nodded, but appeared to be mentally checked out.

Are you going to tell me what happened between you and Sharon in the church? Jack knew something did. But, Mark was being evasive as to what, exactly, happened.

Mark kept staring at his sleeping son.

You do realize she’ll tell me. Jack didn’t mean it as a threat, but it was the truth. He and Sharon had maintained a good friendship, even after Mark had crushed her and left her standing alone at the altar of their wedding day…for Steven Jay Miller, the former cop.

Huh? Yes. Good. Mark wasn’t listening to him.

Bye. Jack stood up and left the room. He was about to find Adam and leave when he heard rustling sounds coming from Billy’s bedroom. Jack peeked into the room, since the door wasn’t closed all the way.

Alex was seated on the bed, slouched over his lap, in exactly the same position as his dad was.

Jack sat beside him in the same way, shoulder to shoulder. How was filming?

Huh? Good. Alex stared into space.

When’s the TV show back from its break?

    Uh…I’m not sure.

Jack knew Alex must be tired. Both he and Adam had also just spent time on a coast to coast flight. Are you okay?

Huh? Yes. Good. Alex dragged his fingers through his long, wavy brown hair.

Feeling déjà vu since he’d just done this with Alex’s dad, Jack gave up. Bye.

He left the room and found not only Adam, but Jeff, Mickey, the rabbi, the mohel, and the priest ready to leave. As he thought about how their young standup comic friend Lou McFadden would think of a good joke to tell about the cops, the rabbi, the mohel, and the priest, Jack was sorry the comic wasn’t here to make one up.

While goodbyes were spoken at the front door, Jack looked for Billy. He was in the kitchen, drinking beer.

    ~

Tadzio and Steve were outside as the friends and family from the gathering spilled out onto the driveway. They were hugging and kissing, shaking hands and smiling, and Tadzio was exhausted.

Once he felt as if he’d said enough farewells to be polite, Tadzio returned to the living room. The house was a mess. Ali and Stan were wrapping leftover food, and Laura, Steve’s older sister, was helping as well, loading the dishwasher and throwing out trash.

Tadzio intended on helping too, but…

He walked down the hallway to the bedroom and peeked into one. Alex was sitting still, staring into space. Tadzio sat beside him, leaning on Alex’s shoulder. I am so happy you are home.

Billy won’t touch me until I get tested at the clinic.

Tadzio frowned and looked down at his high brown boots, which he wore over his beige leggings with an oversized cable knit top. He twirled his blond hair around his finger and said, Why did you not use protection, Alec?

    Alex shrugged.

I will touch you. Tadzio ran his hand over Alex’s thigh.

    You’re going home, aren’t you?

Not until tomorrow… Tadzio noticed Alex’s suitcases still packed. I can help? He pointed to them.

    No. It’s okay.

Then, I will help clean up. Okay?

    Alex shrugged again.

Tadzio kissed his cheek and returned to the kitchen, packing containers of food for Laura and Barry to take home. Chloe, their ten year old daughter, Steve’s niece, was also helping, collecting glasses and paper plates from the living area.

Steve approached his mother. Mom? Why don’t I take you home to get packed so you can come with us tomorrow?

Yes. Susan rinsed her hands, since she was helping clear up as well. Let me get my purse and coat.

Steve dragged Tadzio into his arms to snuggle. We’re leaving early tomorrow, so pack.

Yes. Tadzio kissed him and continued to help with the food trays and plates.

    ~

Stan wiped the counters once the buffet was dismantled. He took a break and gazed at the family that was still here.

His mother dried her hands and faced him. Okay. We need to get packed since our flight leaves early tomorrow and your dad has to return the rental van.

Stan drew his mom into his arms. Thanks for coming.

Of course. She smiled up at him. We’ll figure out a good time to come back. Michael’s going to be in DC for a week but we’ll find a time that works for everyone.

Okay. Stan released her and noticed Susan and Steve leaving the house. Susan was going to help them with Zak. It was a win-win for everyone. They got a nanny with experience, and Susan would be distracted from the violent suicide of her former police sergeant husband, Dick Miller.

Stan’s attorney general dad, as well as his sister, and his sister’s friends had their jackets on and were waiting for Ali. They were staying at Steve’s second home right up the street. He approached them, smiling. Thanks for coming to both the funeral and the bris.

His dad, Michael, patted his cheek. No problem.

Maxine asked, Should we say goodbye now? We’re leaving early tomorrow.

Yes. Leslie hugged Stan. Was so good to see you again.

    Stan rocked her. Thanks, Sis.

Ali, her long camelhair coat on, her purse over her shoulder, indicated she was ready. They hugged and kissed goodbye.

Where’s Mark? Ali looked for him.

He’s napping. Do you want me to wake him? Stan asked.

No. Ali shook her head. It’s been a very long day…and a long weekend for him and Zak. She smiled sadly as she referred to the funeral last Friday. Just give him our love.

I will. Stan lingered at the doorway as his family walked down the street to the second home.

Behind him, Steve and his mom were ready to go, as well as Laura and her husband and daughter. They said goodbye at the door.

Once they left, Stan looked into the house. Tadzio was attending to the details of the room, straightening cushions and throw pillows and making sure everything was neat.

Only Billy, Alex, Mark, Tadzio, and Zak remained after the party dispersed.

He’d seen Alex returning from his month on location shooting his pirate film in the Bahamas; but after Alex had snuck into his and Billy’s bedroom, he didn’t even come out to say hi to anyone, including Stan’s dad whom Alex had a special relationship with. Stan didn’t particularly care for Alexander, especially after Alex had drugged him and sucked his dick while they were filming a movie together in New York.

Stan tried to let it go, but, Alex wasn’t exactly appealing to his sweet side for forgiveness.

Tadzio finished tidying and started the dishwasher. Once he was done, he left the kitchen.

Mark was in the guestroom, Alex in the master bedroom, and Billy was still in the kitchen, drinking beer, staring out of the back glass slider.

Stan stood beside the big lieutenant. Thanks for letting us use your house.

    No problem.

Stan gazed at Billy’s profile. It appeared these last few days, with Steve’s dad’s suicide, Zak’s bris and christening, and the noise and guests visiting, had left Billy as tired as the rest of them.

Instead of asking Billy if he was okay or if Alex had a good experience in the Bahamas, Stan left him alone. He walked down the hallway and when he peeked into the bedroom, Mark was still where he’d left him, staring into space.

    Chapter 2

These are my daughters. That’s Chelsea and that’s Elizabeth-Ann.’

As Mark admired the pretty blonde-blue-eyed little girls, he had a flash of what his life would have been if he had gone through with his marriage to Sharon Tice; if Steve had not crashed their wedding and stolen him in a desperate act of love.

They’re darling. How old are they?’

Chelsea is seven and Elizabeth-Ann is three. Say hello to Mark.’

The little girl shook her head and stood behind Sharon.

How are you?’ Mark asked, spying a gold wedding set on her finger.

I’m doing well. I see your face in all the magazines and celebrity gossip shows on TV.’

I’m sure you’re glad you are well rid of me.’

    Are you wearing makeup?’

Oh.’ Mark touched his cheek. ‘I was…’ He thumbed behind him. ‘I’ve come from a shoot for Dangereux…You look happy.’

I am.’ She hugged and kissed little Elizabeth-Ann affectionately.

Sharon, they are so lovely. They look so much like you.’

    Thanks, Mark.’

    Mark?

Hmmm? He didn’t realize he’d been sitting in the dark as he relived memories.

Stan tiptoed in and peeked at Zak, who was out of it after his ordeal.

Mark rubbed his face and yawned, forcing himself to stand and wash up for bed, even though it wasn’t late. So, we will head home tomorrow at around eight.

Okay. Stan nodded and entered the bathroom, turning on a light. Uh…how are we working out the car situation?

    Mark became confused. Cars?

Yes. I have my Lambo…I guess I’ll follow the limo there?

Yes. Mark allowed Stan to get ready for bed first, and gazed at his brave little man. Praline was sitting up in the corner of the portable crib, smiling at the new addition. Mark caressed Zak’s belly, tucking a blanket around him to keep him warm and cozy. You poor thing. What a day you’ve had.

Luckily you won’t recall a thing.

Now, I only wish I didn’t either. Mark gazed into the bathroom to see Stan dropping his clothing to the floor, so he could shower.

    ~

Alskander? Tadzio pouted, standing in front of him.

Alex looked up at him in the dim room.

Steven and I will sleep wit you? He tugged on Alex’s long hair.

Ha. Alex frowned. I should probably just sleep in your room with you both. Billy’s so mad at me right now.

Tadzio knelt in front of Alex, resting his forearms on Alex’s legs. He was in shooting and bomb scare. Did you know?

Alex gasped and his eyes widened. What? Are you kidding me?

Shhh…Alec… Tadzio indicated the next room. Baby sleeps.

Billy was involved in another shooting? And a bomb scare? Alex stood from the bed, making Tadzio shift back and sit on his boot heels.

Yes. He had very bad week, Alec. So, on top of that you cheat on him. Why? Why, Alec?

Alex narrowed his eyes at Tadzio. You’re joking, right? He sneered. After you blew every straight man who works for my dad? Alex made a noise of sarcasm and left the bedroom.

Tadzio’s mood sank. He kept still in the dark room, toying with his wedding set, his emerald cut diamond solitaire and his gold band.

    ~

The sky was dark and the streetlights lit the valley below the hills. Billy looked through his own reflection in the glass slider at the view. He tipped the beer bottle up and the last drop hit his tongue. In the glass image he noticed Alex enter the kitchen behind him. Billy set the bottle on the counter, and didn’t acknowledge him.

Alex joined him, gazing out across their pool,
