    Chapter 1

The Nation’s Top Male Model, Mark Antonious Richfield, held his six-month-old daughter, Lily Hayden on his lap. She was at the pediatrician’s office getting her scheduled vaccines. Bouncing Lily on one knee, Mark tried to keep her calm as she chewed her fingers, teething as well, and looked around the small examination room.

Dr Rosen entered the room and smiled at Mark.

Lily was gripped to Mark’s shirt as if someone would steal her away if she let go.

    Hi, Mark. How’s Lily doing?

Good, Doctor. Very well. Mark looked up as a nurse entered behind the doctor. She blushed when Mark smiled at her.

The doctor, in his white clinic jacket, was Mark’s three young children’s primary care doctor. He worked at a medical center here in Butte County, California.

Mark had dressed Lily in a summer outfit so her arms and legs were available for a jab.

The nurse tapped information on a computer as the doctor readied the shot.

Mark tried to distract Lily, who had brown eyes and brown hair, like his second husband’s mother, Ali Bergman.

Dr Rosen gave the injection so quickly, Lily appeared surprised, then she gave him a dirty look.

Mark laughed at her expression and rubbed the injection site gently. All done!

The doctor chuckled at her and then sat on a stool and gave her a quick examination. As he did, he asked, How are the boys?

Good! Isaac is doing so well! I can’t believe he’s nearly two and a half. Where does the time go?

Lily began to complain as the doctor checked her neck and little hands and feet.

All right, treacle. Mark cuddled her. The nurse had already recorded Lily’s weight and height.

She’s doing just fine. The doctor removed his rubber gloves and stood from the stool. We’ll schedule her next round of vaccines. He smiled and said, Good to see you.

And you. Mark stood with Lily in his arms and looked around the room to make sure he hadn’t left anything. He carried her to the desk in the lobby and waited as the receptionist scheduled his next visit, and he paid a co-payment.

A bowl of lollipops was on the counter.

Lily reached for one. Mark let her pick a treat and then he unwrapped the little pink pop and she stuck it into her mouth.

Here you go, Mark. He was given a paper receipt. The next date is right here. She pointed to it.

Good. Ta. Mark avoided eye contact with the patients waiting in the room and exited the clinic. The June day was lovely. Paradise in early summer was picture perfect. Mark put his sunglasses on as Lily sucked the candy treat. He opened the door of his blue-purple TVR Tuscan sports car and sat his daughter in the car-seat. Mark buckled her in, and then dropped down to sit behind the wheel.

Wriggling her little feet, Lily held up the pink pop and made a loud noise. Ba…ba…ba…

    Enjoying your lolly? Mark giggled.

She nodded and stuck it back into her mouth.

Mark fired up the high-octane sports car, happy to be in it. Since they had a chauffeur, he rarely had the chance to drive it.

The winding mountain roads were perfect for this amazing car. He turned up the music and as he and Lily returned to the mansion, he sang to the songs.

Lily pedaled her feet and waved her lollipop as she ‘sang’ with her dad.

    ~

Stan Charles Richfield (Bergman) relaxed on a chaise lounge on the back deck near their outdoor pool. The estate he lived in with his Top Model hubby, Mark, had thirteen bedrooms, a spa, a theater room, a library, two dining rooms, tennis and basketball courts, a heli-stop, and a stable, housing four horses.

Mark was at the doctor with Lily, Stan’s biological daughter. Lily was created from a surrogate, his best friend Becca McKenna, and himself. Lily’s brothers, two toddlers, were playing in the outdoor pool.

Isaac Milton, or ‘Zak’, was also a child from their surrogate, and Mark. Zak was the spitting image of his Top Model father, with green eyes and long brown hair. Isaac learned how to swim at a young age, trained by two lifeguard buddies.

In his water-wings, he slid down the slide into the deep water, as Blake Hughes, their fulltime nanny and retired LA fireman, stood near the bottom to catch him if he needed him.

Jacob Bentley, or ‘Jake’ was a year and a half, and blond with blue eyes, like his mother. Mark had an affair with his former fiancée Sharon Tice-Hill, in a church…

Little Jake, being fair-complected, wore a T-shirt in the pool, and paddled around in flotation ring. He also, had been taught to swim and to hold his breath underwater by Josh Elliot and Tanner Cameron, the LA lifeguards.

This weekend his parents Michael and Ali Bergman and his sister, Leslie, were flying in from New York for Father’s Day weekend.

They were expecting a houseful and thankfully the addition, with four new bedrooms and four garages under them, was complete for the overflow.

The back door to the house opened, and former LAPD lieutenant Billy Sharpe emerged. With him was his dog, Lady, a white Saluki-mix mutt. Billy, a big muscular man in his early fifties, dove into the water.

Lady leapt in right after he did, yapping as she paddled her skinny legs.

Stan chuckled as his sons immediately engaged the lieutenant, who was also their caregiver, and the loony mutt.

Daddy! Daddy! Isaac climbed out of the water and stood at the base of the slide, his long wet hair dripping. Come wiff me!

Stan grinned happily and hopped off the lounge chair. He scooped Isaac up and climbed the ladder, holding his son in one arm. Isaac giggled in glee and Stan barely managed to fit on the slide. He held Isaac and they zipped down, and into the water.

    ~

Steven Jay Miller, cop-turned-adman-turned CEO, checked the time on his computer. He and Jack Larsen, their in-house attorney, had come to work in Sacramento for a few hours before the weekend gathering.

Steve was Mark’s first husband, and he lived at the sprawling estate with Mark. He rubbed his face and yawned, then checked his mobile phone.

His mother, sister, brother-in-law, and niece were coming this weekend too. Steve’s current boyfriend, Toby Smith, was also his corporate jet and chopper pilot. Toby was flying him and Jack to the estate this afternoon in the chopper, and then using their Learjet to fly the group from Los Angeles to Sacramento tomorrow morning.

They hadn’t had a house filled with this many guests since Christmas.

Steve wasn’t a fan of kids, so…he and Mark had divorced over that issue.

Mark wanted children, and now he had three…not counting Alexander, his oldest son, who was in his thirties and married to Billy Sharpe.

Jack and his husband, talent agent Adam Lewis, Blake Hughes and his Butte County fire captain husband, Hunter Rasmussen, Alex and Billy, all lived at the mansion.

They also had four employees; Sierra, their chef, Warren, her husband, was their manservant, Louis, their chauffeur, and Andrew, their horse groom, worked daily but did not live at the mansion.

As spring and early summer turned the Sierra Nevada Mountains green and lush, Steve thought about taking time off for a holiday. But, he wanted to go someplace with Toby, away from the estate. Maybe Europe?

Yes, the estate was a holiday getaway for his LA buddies, but to him? It was a noisy place to be…with too many kids.

Steve paused in his computer work and stood from the desk. He lingered at the huge wall of glass, looking out at the spectacular Sacramento skyline; the bridge, the river, and the iconic buildings.

    ~

Jack Larsen tapped his keyboard as he worked in his corner office. Having two walls of windows was nice, but, when the sun hit, the room became warm. The big, blond, gym-junkie stood from his desk, took off his reading glasses, and drew the vertical blinds.

He knew Steve wanted to work until around two at Richfield-Miller International. This garment manufacturing firm had been created by Mark’s deceased father, Milt Richfield, and had offices here, in Sacramento, in New York, Paris, and London.

With Mark at the helm, it was flourishing. They had dozens of new clients after Fashion Week last February. Jack had come from his own law firm in Los Angeles, to live at the mansion and work here, at RMI. He loved it. His husband, Adam, worked from the estate.

Jack checked on his secretary, Harriet Shaw, a mature woman of color. He paused near her desk, which was right outside his office. You can wrap up and go home, Harriet.

She was typing on the computer and paused to reply, Let me finish this, and I will.

Jack smiled at her and walked down the long corridor to Steve and Mark’s executive office. He entered it and spotted Steve standing near the wall of glass.

The handsome former LAPD cop wore a designer blue business suit, the jacket off, his shirt-sleeves rolled up. Steve turned to look when Jack entered the bright space.

Daydreaming? Jack asked as he stood with Steve to see the view.

I’m thinking of taking a vacation with Toby. I just don’t know where to go.

Jack put his arm around Steve and they took a break, enjoying the view on this summer’s day.

    ~

Talent agent Adam Lewis worked from the study in the mansion. He and Jack had moved here from Malibu. They still owned a beachfront home there, but rented it to two LAPD detectives, Jeff Chandler, and Mickey Stanton.

Adam loved living here at the estate. Except…for the kids. Some days they were so noisy, he escaped with his laptop to a bedroom in the new addition over the four-car garage.

On his computer screen was a pair of open video-chat boxes with his two LA assistants, Natalie Cushman and Logan Naveah. Since it was Friday, they were going to finish work earlier than usual.

His phone earpiece in his head, Adam spoke to a casting agent while he opened emails, multitasking.

"Look, Buzzy, I have no idea when A Year at An Khê is being released, but my guess is George Ford will want a huge summer blockbuster."

No doubt. I heard the award nominations were in.

Really? Adam paid attention. Is there a link you can send me?

Done…so, Stan’s out for more acting roles?

Yeah. After he was away from the kids for two months, he told me no more for a while. Adam looked for the email with the link. But, Carl Bronson, Keith O’Leary, Jeremy Runner…come on, Buzz. Give me some insider noise.

You know you’re the first man I come to for talent, so don’t complain.

Adam opened the link. He scanned the names. Okay, Buzz. Have a good weekend.

    Late’… Buzzy disconnected the call.

Adam took a moment to read through the list of nominees. Alex! Alex is on the list!

Natalie and Logan stopped working and paid attention. He is? Natalie, with her purple hair, tats, and piercings asked.

"Yes! He was nominated for Best Actor in a romance movie for Happy Endings!" Adam sent his two workers the list via an instant message on the computer.

"When’s his new film, Smoking Gun, coming out?" Logan asked.

Fuck if I know. Adam picked up his phone and sent Alex a text. Alex was still in Los Angeles, filming his nighttime cable TV series. But, he was expected back to the estate this weekend.

I hope he wins, Logan said over the video, He’s never gotten an award.

"That’s because he’s been typecast. But, in Smoking Gun, he plays a different character." Adam kept scanning the names.

Look, Jeremy Runner and Keith O’Leary have been nominated for Best Actor in a drama film! Natalie said.

Adam searched for their names. Oh, no. They’re competing with each other for the same award. Goddamn it. Adam had a feeling Keith didn’t stand a chance against a seasoned vet like Jeremy Runner. He hoped Keith won. Keith had an amazing role as a serial killer in a film called, When Death Knocks. He did an outstanding job.

Adam heard the kids’ shrieks approaching. He winced.

Jacob, Isaac, and the floppy moppet, Lady, entered the study. Aydum! Isaac said, wearing shorts and a T-shirt after he had been bathed after the early morning swim. Seeawa’s serving lunch! He leaned over Adam’s legs. Daddy Stan said to get you.

Lunch! Jacob aped his big brother as Lady sniffed around the study, her white fringe tail flapping.

Okay. He waved to Logan and Natalie. I’m signing off for the weekend. Go home.

Natalie waved and said, Becca and I will see ya tomorrow!

Have a good weekend! Logan also waved.

Bye. Adam shut down the video-boxes. His assistant, Natalie, was Becca McKenna’s steady girlfriend. Becca had been the surrogate for both Zak and Lily. They had recently bought a house together with the money Mark had paid her for carrying both of his children. Adam had no idea how much the Top Model had given Becca, but Adam had no doubt it was a substantial sum.

Let’s go, Aycup! Zak sped out of the room, his little brother in pursuit, followed by Lady.

Adam shut down the computer after printing the list of nominees. He sent Jeremy Runner and Keith O’Leary a text, letting them know they were both nominated. Nothing this time for Carl. Oh, well. His last film, The Mask of Mac Marvel tanked. It appeared a 1940s film noir with CGI time travel wasn’t a hit with audiences.

But, Carl had won Academy Awards before. Keith, his husband, had not.

The last films both Alexander and the other three men, and Stan, had been in? Smoking Gun and A Year at An Khê? No doubt, they were going to be huge. Sadly, they did not make the nomination cut, but, were going to be released this summer.

Adam rose up from his desk and stretched his back while looking at the wall of original photos from Mark’s modeling career.

When Mark’s modeling agent, Arnold Newhouse, retired, he’d given Mark the gorgeous framed photographs he had hanging in his Los Angeles office.

Mark in his prime. The male model had been named ‘The World’s Most Beautiful Man’, ‘The Sexiest Man Alive’, and even ‘The Most Eligible Bachelor’ when he was single, before he came out of the closet and married Steve Miller. Even before Mark had dated Sharon Tice.

Adam paused as he admired them. Mark Antonious…the man was still gorgeous. Forever young…

Chuckling to himself, Adam left the study and made his way to the chaos of kids in the kitchen’s nook bench seating area.

    ~

Mark parked his sports car in the four-car garage attached to the mansion. Lily had fallen asleep in her car-seat. He had taken a drive on the fabulous mountain roads to enjoy his TVR, since he rarely drove it.

Mark shut the motor down and moved his sunglasses to the top of his head. He unfastened Lily’s harness. The lollipop had fallen to the floor mat as she snoozed.

Mark chuckled at her and exited the car. He walked around it to the passenger’s door.

Louis, his chauffeur, was waxing Jack’s maroon Jaguar. They had too many automobiles but no one seemed to want to sell.

Stan’s green Lamborghini, Aventador was back after he had returned from filming A Year at An Khê.

Billy’s macho black Corvette was also in this garage, while Steve’s black Mercedes sedan, Adam’s black BMW, Hunter’s white extended-cab pickup truck, and the black stretch limousine filled the spaces in the new four-car garage annex.

Louis smiled as he approached. Did it go okay?

Yes. She’s a champ. Mark reached into his car and held up the lolly which had lint on it. For some reason it made him laugh.

Louis took it and tossed it out in
