While on vacation in Gran Canaria, lying on the beach under the stars, thirty-year-old elementary school teacher, Bobby Kingston, meets handsome Damion Lawless. After sharing their admiration for The Great Hunter, Orion, Bobby’s interest in Damion is piqued.

Damion sees his opportunity to escape, and Bobby is happy to help.
But- there are consequences.
Once the two men return to the States, they begin to suffer strange symptoms.

It’s then that Damion reveals his ex may have been involved in dark arts. As they join forces to battle a demon, the men call on an ally. Orion the Hunter.

And the worst part about seeking help from a deity is not knowing how powerful the spirit you have invoked really is.

Orion in the Sky- myth or guardian? Bobby and Damion are about to find that out.

    Reality is a living dream.

Dreams are the key to our secret world.’

    Chapter 1

Bobby Kingston stood on the silky sand blown to the beach from the Sahara Desert. The wind was strong, but Gran Canaria’s blustery breeze was calm compared to Fuerteventura. This was his third trip to the Canary Islands, and by far, the best.

As the evening began to make the sky lush with pink and peach hues, he zipped his light jacket and sat down on one of the lounge chairs. The hotel was behind him, and having an all-inclusive holiday meant buffets with outstanding food.

He didn’t want to leave. As the day turned into night, Bobby reclined on the beach chair, seeing the first star light the sky.

With the lulling sound of the waves crashing against the shore, Bobby tapped off his flip-flops and breathed deeply.

It was his first vacation alone. He didn’t know what to expect.

He was having the time of his life.

His focus on the sky, Bobby could sleep here, under the moonlit night. And then, the constellations appeared; the Big Dipper, the Pleiades, and then his favorite of them all. Three bright stars making up the belt of Orion.

Bobby smiled in pleasure when the entire constellation came into view as the sun dipped below the horizon.

    ~

    You really should be grateful.

    I said thank you.

I have no idea why I thought taking you on another vacation was a good idea.

Damion Lawless stopped his forward progress. You think this is fun for me?

You did not just say that.

Damion ran his hand over his hair and tried to keep his voice calm. You asked me to come.

    I don’t know why.

I do. Because no one else would go with you.

    I can’t believe this.

Damion tried to bite his tongue. He had a feeling his and Earl’s relationship was on its last leg. Yes, he hoped going with Earl to one of the hotels Earl had invested in would salvage what was becoming a miserable reality. He and Earl Neel were not going to last.

I’m going back to our room, Earl said.

    Fine.

    Are you coming?

Now you want me to come?

Earl flipped him off and left.

Damion watched him go, and then put his hands into his jacket pockets. The evening brought with it cooler air, and a breeze blowing from the Atlantic Ocean. He left the pathway and walked to the water.

Damion stood on the soft sand. Dating a hotel owner certainly had its perks, but Earl had become unbearably controlling.

When they first met, Damion was slightly intimidated by Earl. Earl was forty, eleven years older than he was. Damion drove a delivery truck, and the two of them met when Damion had a drop-off at one of Earl’s hotels.

Earl was flamboyant with his brightly colored clothing and jewelry; gold necklaces and rings, and even a pierced ear with a small gold hoop. When he first met him, Damion had a feeling the older man was gay, but knew for certain when Earl flirted with him overtly.

Damion looked up at the dark sky. The stars were out, and since there was less ambient light here than back home in Southern California, he could see so many pinpoints of light, the usual few constellations he knew, seemed to vanish.

He removed his tennis shoes and felt the velvety sand under his feet. He checked his watch. It was nearing ten. A few people were out on the beach, which was located directly behind the hotel. There were rows of padded lounge chairs provided by the hotel staff. In the dimming light, Damion could see someone lying on one. He didn’t take a seat near the person, not wanting to disturb them.

    ~

Bobby noticed a young man sit down on a lounge chair. The man was sitting up, staring at the cresting waves. Bobby took a look behind him to see if anyone was going to join him. The young man appeared to be alone.

Bobby put his feet on the sand and sat up. He looked at the moon reflecting over the water, and then at the man again. "Hola."

The man turned to towards him. Hi.

    Nice night.

    It is.

    American?

    Yes. You?

Bobby stood and picked up his flip-flops, taking the chair beside the young man. Yes.

There aren’t many of us here. The man extended his hand. I’m Damion Lawless.

Bobby Kingston. He shook his hand. It seems as if the Brits and Germans know how to pick a holiday destination.

They do. I love this place.

    Have you been here before?

No. It’s my first time. You?

It’s my first time here, in Gran Canaria, but I’ve been to both Tenerife and Fuerteventura.

    Nice.

Bobby thumbed over his shoulder. Are you staying at the Playa?

    Yes.

Bobby wanted to ask if the man had traveled alone, like he had, but didn’t. Where in the States are you from?

I’m from LA. But I’m living in San Diego now.

That’s funny. I’m from San Diego and live in LA.

    Really?

Small world. Bobby tried to get a read on this guy. He thought the man was very handsome with his conservatively cut brown hair and muscular build. Am I bugging you?

Damion laughed. No. Not at all.

Bobby gazed up at the stars again.

    ~

Damion tried to see what Bobby looked like in the dimness. If he were to guess, he’d say Bobby was in his late twenties? Maybe? with a dark head of hair. Are you here with someone?

A low laugh came from Bobby. Nope.

    Really? You came alone?

    I did.

    Huh.

I made that mistake twice. Not this time.

Damion laughed and glanced at Bobby. Uh huh.

Bobby looked his way. What about you?

Damion stared at the whitecaps on the ocean waves. I’m sort of here with someone.

    Sort of?

    We had a fight.

I see. And she needed to cool off?

    Damion met Bobby’s gaze. He.

    He?

That’s what I said. You got a problem with that?

    ~

Bobby was stunned. He repositioned himself on the recliner, sitting closer to Damion. No. Not at all. Is he your boyfriend?

    Probably not for long.

    Wanna talk about it?

Damion gave him a sly smile. No.

After contemplating the topic, Bobby said, The first time I traveled to Tenerife, I got into a fight with my partner. He wanted to hang out in the pubs and watch sports all day.

    Bobby got Damion’s attention.

The second time, I wanted to windsurf in Fuerte. The man I brought told me he didn’t. Instead, he hung out on the nude beach without me.

    So, you wised up?

I did. I wanted to come to this island alone.

    How’s it been?

    Bobby smiled. Spectacular.

    Can I say I’m jealous?

Bobby chuckled. I hit the big three-oh and decided to do what I want, when I want.

Then, all I have to do is wait a year?

Now knowing Damion was almost his age, Bobby thought about them meeting here, like this. Is your partner older?

    Yeah. Why did you ask?

Just took a stab in the dark. Lying flat on the recliner, Bobby put his hands behind his head and stared at the sky. He heard Damion shifting his position on the lounge beside him.

    There’re so many stars.

Bobby pointed to the sky. I only can see a few I recognize. You can’t miss Orion.

Love that constellation. I guess as a kid, you remember the ones that fascinate you the most.

The Greek mythology is pretty depressing.

I know. He gets killed. If I wrote the story, he’d be a fabulous gay warrior.

In love with a man. Bobby smiled. I know. I would rewrite it too.

Why don’t we do it together?

Awesome. Bobby stared at the constellation. Do you want to start?

Sure… Orion falls for Apollo instead of his sister.

And they run away and live happily ever after?

I certainly wouldn’t have killed him. Artemis, that jealous bitch. I mean, killing him while he swam?

Bobby started laughing. Well, supposedly she didn’t know it was our hero in the water.

    Bullshit.

Bobby smiled as he admired the mighty Greek god. Or do you think Mother Earth zapped him with her scorpion?

Either way, it was jealousy that killed him.

Well, he did boast he could kill anything that came from earth.

Dude. He’s a macho hunter. Of course he boasted about his skill. Wouldn’t you if you were a powerful hunter?

True. I bet he has a big dick.

    Damion cracked up. Of course.

    Are you into it? Stargazing?

I dabble. I wouldn’t say I know much about it. But, Orion has a special place in my heart.

Mine too. I teach my kids about it.

    You have kids?

No. Not my own. I’m a teacher.

    Oh. That’s cool.

I take them on trips to Griffith Park and the Samuel Oschin Planetarium.

I fucking loved those places as a kid.

    Me too. I love science.

    Huh.

Bobby glanced over at Damion. They were both admiring the stars. They stayed quiet for a while, then Bobby asked, Is your boyfriend going to be upset you’re not with him?

He’s upset with me when I am, and when I’m not.

How long have you been together, if you don’t mind me asking.

I don’t mind. On and off for around six months.

Bobby thought about it, then noticed something moving in the velvety sky. Did you see that?

I was going to ask you what it was.

    A satellite.

    Awesome.

A tone from a cell-phone made it to Bobby’s ear. He knew it wasn’t his.

    ~

Damion took his phone out of his pocket. Excuse me.

    No problem.

Damion read the text. ‘Are you coming to the room?

    later.

    where are you?

Christ. Damion put the phone into his pocket.

    Bobby looked over at him.

You’re lucky you’re alone. Damion put his hands behind his head and tried to find another satellite.

It’s odd, isn’t it? When we’re alone, we want a partner, when we have one, we want to be alone.

Totally agreeing with Bobby, Damion inhaled the ocean breeze deeply. He’s a controlling bitch.

    That’s gotta suck.

Damion thought about unloading on Bobby, but he didn’t want to turn the guy off. It was nice to meet someone to chill with. How much longer are you staying?

I leave early Monday morning. Bobby asked, And you?

Damion sat up on the foot of the chair and ran his hand over his hair. I don’t fucking know.

Bobby mirrored his position and sounded concerned, You don’t know?

Thumbing over his shoulder towards the hotel, Damion said, He’s a part owner of the hotel. We stay for free.

Lucky you. Or not so lucky you?

Damion rested his chin on his palm and stared at the black water lit by only the moon. I knew this vacation was a lousy idea.

    I’m sorry.

He nagged the shit out of me to come.

And he had no idea when you would leave?

He said in a few days. But, now? I want to head out.

That really sucks. This island is so beautiful. It’s sad you can’t enjoy it.

Right? Damion leaned over to touch the sand, letting it fall through his fingers. I wish I could stay in my own room.
