I drove my car through Podunk's small downtown, checking out the various storefronts. I didn’t often come down here, but I knew it was all still mine. My town.

Every since I sold my startup company and moved to Podunk, I had done everything I could to increase my influence. I donated to the mayor’s funds, donated to local charities, and hobnobbed with the right people. I made sure I knew everyone and that everyone knew me.

Even more important than the time spent with the right people, I made the days of a lot of regular people better. From the guy at the car wash to the guy who picked up my trash, I made sure that everyone got a little piece of my money. It wasn't much for me, but the extra made them bend over backward to do whatever I wanted.
