I’m going to lunch, Bren said. Hope you don’t mind.

My secretary was standing in the doorway of my office with one arm on the jamb and her hip tilted out. She was making the pouty face that I’d become accustomed to whenever she wanted something, or whenever she wanted me to take it easy on her. Usually her requests were mostly menial things—like a day off, or to come in late, or for me to fix her computer or something. But today was a little different. Needless to say, there was a lot to get done, and I didn’t really need her taking a lunch. But what could I do? She already knew all of this. She knew we were backed up and there were loads of work to be done. And she still wanted to go out for lunch.

I leaned back in my chair and clasped my hands behind my head. Maybe you could be back a little early? I said.

Her face got poutier. I’ll try, she said, flashed me a smile and then turned and walked back to her desk. By the way, she said, her back towards me as she shuffled papers, I’m taking Aubrey.
