She's not sure she's making the right decision, but she hopes this is kinder than making him watch her die…

Nick is pretty sure his wife is having an affair

Detective Nicholas Duncan had it all. A beautiful marriage. A successful career. Then his wife leaves him. Nicholas suspects she's having an affair and he can't imagine why she would be so cavalier about what they had together for all those years. Chapter One

    Blue Without You

Nicholas Duncan shut down his computer and grabbed his briefcase to head out the door. It was 6 pm on the dot and he hated to leave any later. He’d always been a routine kind of guy. He stuck to the same schedule every day unless a really big case came along.

Hey, Nick, you catch another one today? One of the traffic cops, Carl Sellers, stopped him on the way out with a slap on the back.

They’d been pretty good work friends for a few years, but lately Nick had been avoiding him and everyone else he’d been close with for that matter. He nodded and smiled politely, but kept making his way towards the exit. He hoped Carl would get the message that he wasn’t in the mood to chat, but apparently not.

Carl followed him. So, where’s Lee? I haven’t seen her come in here, in forever. We miss her around here. Be sure to bring her by soon.

Nick looked down at the simple titanium wedding band on his finger and sighed inwardly. There was a good reason Lee hadn’t been into the office. In fact, she’d been away for two months exactly. Whenever someone left the person they pledged to love for the rest of their lives, they didn’t make a habit of showing up to have lunch with them anymore. Thanks will do. You have a nice evening, Carl. I’ve gotta get home, okay? Nick didn’t wait for a response as he practically ran down the steps, to get to his car.

Hey, Duncan, what’s the hurry? Trying to get home to that wife of yours?

Nick looked around to see another colleague, John Fisher, having a cigarette nearby. Nick would explode if he had to hear any more questions about his wife. He knew the day would come when people would notice, but he wasn’t ready. He still held out hope, she might come back one day, that he might talk her out of the dumbest decision of both their lives. Just ready to go home, John. You have a good day now. Nicholas thought he would have a panic attack right there in front of his co-worker.

Change wasn’t something he handled well and not having his wife around all of a sudden was way too big a change to wrap his head around. It didn’t help that the whole situation had caught him off guard. Had he gotten too comfortable with her? Had he taken her for granted? Even if he did, he wasn’t sure it warranted what she did.

You too, Nick. Say hi to Lee for me! Everyone loved his wife, it seemed. Maybe that was the problem. She was the type of woman who attracted everyone to her.

But why throw their marriage away?

He jumped into his car and took off, turning the music up on his stereo to drown out any depressing thoughts that might worm their way to the front of his mind. He sang out of tune to the mix of 80s and 90s music. He thought of how delightful his wife was when she made fun of his taste in music. She always said it made her feel old, listening to music that’d been around for decades.

    He pushed the thought
