    Anais and Pierre lived on the outskirts of Cannes. They were newlyweds, and while he went into town every morning to buy up old houses for restoration, she could to stay at home and enjoy life in the luxurious surroundings, which her parents had gifted them as a wedding present. Anais was the only daughter of a well-heeled jeweller, and she wouldn’t have any financial troubles for the rest of her life, not even without her husband. Pierre was all that she had ever dreamed of; he was handsome, intelligent, and wealthy.

    He had grown up in a home that was nothing like hers, but he had good manners, which meant a lot, not just to Anais, but certainly also to her parents. He was tall and masculine, without coming off brawny, his black hair was lively and called something sensual to mind, and when he wore sunglasses, she thought he looked like a film star. They suited each other well, she was almost as tall as him, her long red hair was smooth, and her light skin created a nice contrast with her green eyes and luscious lips.

    They turned heads when they went out together, people talked about them, and not without envy, which was something Anais had learned to appreciate through her upbringing when she had been more for show than for play. Pierre was a good man. He was warm, something she had needed all of her life, but never missed because she had no experience of it, yet she knew that something was missing until she met him.
