Heaven
Incarnation of Lord Rama
The terror and torment of demon King Ravana were increasing day by day on the earth. The earth was overburdened by the sins of cruel Ravana. Goddess Earth made an appeal to Lord Indra to bring out a solution. Lord Indra gathered the Gods of the heaven and went to Lord Vishnu . Hearing the appeals from Gods, Lord Vishnu promised to eliminate the root of evil from earth forever.
I will soon take birth on earth in a human form and destroy the evil,
assured Lord Vishnu to the Gods. This was a start to the historic saga of Ramayana or the tale of Maryada Purushottam (man of principles) Rama.
The Magnificent City of Ayodhya
The state of Koshal was situated beside the river Saryu. People in this state enjoyed a happy and prosperous life. It had a city named Ayodhya. The city was built by King Manu. Ayodhya was a rich and beautiful city. It was lined with beautiful fruit bearing trees on both sides. Huge orchards and gardens full of fruits and colourful flowers enhanced the beauty of Ayodhya.
Ayodhya was similar to Amravati, the city of Lord Indra. It had huge gates, big shops, dancers and drama troupes. King Dashratha ruled the city. Dasharatha was the son of Aja and Indumati. He was a kind and wise king.
Dashratha had a splendid palace. It was located in the centre of the city. His ministers were able and loyal. They helped him take wise decisions for the wellbeing of his country. King Dashratha’s fame spread far and wide.
Ravana’s Revenge on Dashratha
Ravana, the Rakshasa king of Lanka, heard of Dasharatha and his fame. He was filled with envy. He soon made a plan to destroy Dashratha’s kingdom. Ravana sought for an excuse to provoke Dasharatha into a fight.
One day, he sent a messenger to Ayodhya.
"Go to Ayodhya and meet King Dashratha. Tell him that unless a tribute is paid to me, Dashratha would have
