    Noemie was walking all alone along a path when she saw a funny character at a distance. Although he was far away, she could see that he was clad in white clothes, that he had a long goatee and his gait was such that he seemed to be from another world. He held a long cane in his right hand on which he did not even lean.

    She felt a bit uneasy but was perfectly aware she could not avoid him. She mustered courage, thinking that if something were to happen, she could call her dog Balthazar to her defence. So she did, and the next minute, Balthazar was there, wagging his tail.

    The old man was slowly approaching her, taking the time to look around him. He seemed to be discovering his surroundings for the first time. Noemie was somewhat intrigued by his attitude. However, what troubled her most was that Balthazar was not aggressive towards the stranger. On the contrary, he seemed perfectly calm, almost too calm.

    What if this old man has the power to cast a spell on people and animals? Balthazar is very sensitive, and maybe he has already let himself be bewitched from a distance, she thought.

    Before jumping to hasty conclusions, she decided to wait until something really happened. Thus she was slightly anxious, not knowing how to behave when the man would reach them. Balthazar still did not growl, neither did he bare his teeth as he did when approached by any suspicious-looking person. Her mind was not in the least at rest. Nevertheless, she continued walking, her curiosity gaining over her fears.
