The students in the Jewel High gym bleachers whoop and applaud at the conclusion of the final cheer of our seventh-period pep rally. As the noise dies down, our principal takes the mic to thank the cheerleaders, the team, and everyone else for coming, then dismisses the crowd.

Trina, the head cheerleader, waylays me before I can join M, who’s making her way down from the stands. "Please, Rigel, you have to come tonight, Trina insists, clutching my arm with both hands and smiling up at me. I have all kinds of special stuff planned and everyone wants you there.
