Starstruck

Nerdy astronomy geek Marsha, M to her few friends, has never been anybody special. Orphaned as an infant and reluctantly raised by an overly-strict “aunt,” she’s not even sure who she is. M’s dream of someday escaping tiny Jewel, Indiana and making her mark in the world seems impossibly distant until hot new quarterback Rigel inexplicably befriends her. As Rigel turns his back on fawning cheerleaders to spend time with M, strange things start to happen: her acne clears up, her eyesight improves to the point she can ditch her thick glasses, and when they touch, sparks fly—literally! When M digs for a reason, she discovers deep secrets that will change her formerly humdrum life forever . . . and expose her to perils she never dreamed of. Yes, the middle of nowhere just got a lot more interesting!

Good and fun story. Great for starting readers, ages 12 to 15, but if you're older, looking for a light story to improve your day, this one might be it!

Not my normal read, but i liked it from the start. I realized it must be a YA book, so I set it aside. I couldn't get it off of my mind and out of my head. As soon as I finished the book I picked up instead of finishing Starstruck, I picked it up again. I really enjoyed it and I can't wait to read Star crossed to see what happens next.

The only reason I purchased this book was because of all of the five-star ratings that I saw on Goodreads.
Maybe it was my high expectation but I found myself shaking my head at every new development, not in astonishment, but in disbelief that so many people thought that this story was amazing.
This is one of those stories where a potentially good plot gets chucked aside in favor of an insta-love, whirl-wind, "I just met you, but I cannot live without you" romance. Where every decision the protagonist makes revolves a boy and how it would affect her relationship with him. Where, when they are apart, she seems to not be able to function. Where she ignores her friends, who were her friends got ages, because of a boy.
And let's not get into the fact that she was painted as a plain, nerd - with acne and glasses - but was made beautiful (all the guys are now noticing her, no more acne or glasses) because of a guy.

    I can't.

I enjoyed Starstruck by Brenda Hiatt more than I expected, and I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I won a copy at a facebook party and am so glad I did.

Starstruck features a bookish, unpopular and clumsy high-school heroine, Marsha (M to her friends). Rather than being a cliched YA character with a weak personality, M has a lot of self confidence, but even she is surprised when the new star quarterback at her school takes an interest in her and not only because she pronounces his name correctly. Rigel has a secret and he knows something about M too. When M learns the truth about her mysterious birth parents, her world turns upside down in the best possible way. The plot kept me guessing and the characters were so engaging, I had a hard time putting the book down. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a bit of shopping to do for book 2.
