Will I meet someone special tonight? Joan asked as she shuffled the oversized cards. It was her favorite deck, the one that began her journey into tarot reading. Still, it was difficult to shuffle with her small hands.

Three cards flew out of the deck.

Joan laid them on her desk.

Hmm...Ace of cups, knight of cups and the knight of pentacles. That’s interesting, she mumbled.

Joan picked up each card, one at a time. Even though she used this deck often, the details of the artwork always managed to surprise her. She could almost feel the water flowing down from the sky into the cup, smell the roses inside the cup carried by the knight in shining silver armor and hear the steady trot of the horse ridden by the knight in gold.

There might be hope for me after all. She grabbed the card she knew usually represented prince charming and noticed there was another card stuck to it. Seven of Swords.

Before Joan could process the reading, her mom shouted, Your friend Lo-sita is calling. And when you’re done, don’t forget to call tio Juan to thank him for setting up the summer internship with his CPA.

Her mom had only met Lo once, but she had taken an instant liking to her friend. It was probably the cookies Lo had brought with her, or maybe Lo’s natural sweet nature.

    Joan ran down the stairs.

I should probably look into getting a cell phone, she thought. Her dad was against it, probably because he thought it cost too much. She might need to find a real job, but she doubted she would have time this summer. She helped at her parent’s jewelry store, without pay. And now with this accounting internship she would have no time at all. A part of her wanted to tell her parents she didn’t want to do the internship. Lately she wasn’t even sure she wanted to be an accountant, no matter how well they got paid.

Lo’s squeaky voice drew her attention. Hi Joan, sorry to bother you.

Joan couldn’t help but smile. They met when Lo joined the swim team last season. At first, she was surprised the coach had let the short girl on the team. Lo was a complete newbie who hardly knew the basics, but watching her work so hard to get better had motivated the team. That and Coach’s addiction to Lo’s cookies helped her stay on the team even after her many mishaps.

Hi Lo. It’s no problem at all. How are you?

Oh me. I’m good. After an awkward pause Lo said, How are you?

It would be great if I could manage to find a boyfriend, Joan wanted to reply. It had been over a year since Garek, and that hadn’t even been serious.

    I’m good too.

Another pause. Joan was used to Lo’s pauses.

Umm...I forgot why I called—oh yeah, did you manage to get the trophy engraved? Lo’s voice grew louder with excitement.

Yes, I did. I have it packed and ready to go. I’ll bring it with me tonight to Eli’s big gig.

Joan admired Eli for his determination to be a comedian, even though most of his jokes weren’t funny. You can only hear so many fart jokes, she thought. At least the team would be there to support him.

Perfect, but we have to make sure Nick doesn’t see it. I want it to be a super surprise.

No worries. I’m sure he won’t suspect a thing, Joan said and then added, I never took Nick to like parties or celebrations of any kind.

"He doesn’t. He hates them. But it’s his birthday.
