The Walls Are Alive - Nimrad Robinson

    Chapter 1

AS HE LAY IN A SINGLE bed positioned in the middle of a small room, he raised his head and looked around. The room was dimly lit from the light shining in from the piece of cloth covering the window. He sat up topless and stared at the pile of shoes in the corner of the room, there were clothes scattered all over the room and in a heap on the floor. The walls of the room were white in colour but some parts were stained and tainted. The air was damp with a foul odour of dirty socks and cigarettes. A sharp pain shot through his right temple as he touched his face to check for any injuries. No cuts or bumps but the stale taste of alcohol and cigarettes filled his mouth and numbed his taste buds. The events of the previous night flashed before his eyes Hectic! I’m still alive , he said to himself as he shook his head with a grin.

The events of the previous night made him think about how lucky he was to be still breathing. He had danced with fate but somehow escaped almost unscathed. He held his hands up to his face and noticed them shaking from the thought of what could have happened. There was a can of beer and a pack of cigarettes on the table besides the bed, he reached out and grabbed the two. Inside the box of cigarettes was a lighter that he used to spark up the cigarette. Cheers to another day in the belly of the beast , he said with a smirk on his face before taking a gulp of warm beer. He sighed in satisfaction then walked over to the window, pulled away the cloth and peered outside. The sky was slightly cloudy as the sun shone dazzlingly through the window. He opened the window and had a smoke, beer in hand as he overlooked the neighborhood. Outside were children playing, the sound of birds singing and chirping, vehicles roaring as they drove up and down the streets. The sound of drills and machinery could be heard from the nearby construction sites. Looking out the window he could see how worn out and dilapidated the building he resided in was. There were broken windows, walls covered in graffiti and murals, old broken down cars and rubbish bins full of litter. Looking out his window gave him the feeling of a post apocalyptic scene with the almost lifeless buildings around.

HE FLICKED THE REST of his cigarette out the window downed his beer and tossed the empty can out too. He stood there and took in some fresh air but was startled by a loud knock at the door. He turned in a fright and faced the door to see if anyone would enter. There was brief silence then another loud knock this time louder than before. He walked over to the bed and pulled a steel pipe from under the bed, gripped it tightly and walked over to the door. His heart was leaping out his chest as his breathing got deeper with every step. There was a loud thud outside the room which made him freeze in his steps then suddenly the doorknob turned in attempt to open.

    As the door knob
