The Ghost in the Mirror - David Anthony Brown

    one

Nothing like staying inside on a sunny day, except for the lack of a chilled glass of port. Not that Katelyn Madison ever drank port, or any variety of wine anymore, but she enjoyed the rich flavorful smell. The way her nose tingled when the bold aroma sank in excited her.

On this sunny day, Kate was stuck inside with the third cup of coffee. Once coffee got cold, it no longer smelled as wonderful. The bitter aroma turned flat. Wine didn't do that when chilled or hot, it didn't need to be any particular temperature to tingle her senses in the right way. She might've traded up the coffee for a cheap fruity Arbor Mist. If she ever got the hang of using her smart phone, she'd text her personal assistant, Janet, to stop by the liquor store by the end of the day.

Or perhaps ask the boy-toy lounging in her bed to bring back wine for later. Ryan whatever-his-last-name was. Surely he had a day job or somewhere to go to? Either way, he wasn't staying in her apartment all day just to spend another all night. Kate would make sure of that. Didn't matter how charming his goofy grin was, or the cute way his thick black hair stood up in funny ways after Kate had played with it and loosened the gel holding it down. Experience taught Kate to not let mortals hang around all day and night. Night only. Find something else to do during the daylight hours.

She held the purple ceramic cup to her nose. The coffee had been on for an hour. It was the good stuff at least, not the instant crap Janet drank when she stopped by on her afternoon runs. This coffee came out of a slick expensive bag and had to be ground in a special machine. Kate had no idea if caffeine affected her at all. Perhaps not in the way it did with mortals. For them, it was a pick-me-up to wake them up in the morning or carry them through the long afternoon or to keep them up all night. Vampires had no need for a drug
