    Twelve Hours Earlier

Merry woke up to a terribly cold room burrowed under a heavy pile of blankets. The cold nipped at her nose like a cold kiss greeting her for the morning. Kicking off the covers, she jumped from the bed donning her robe and slippers. The first thing on her agenda this morning would be to turn up the heat, and second to start the coffee maker. Hurrying from the room, she had almost tripped over her cat lounging lazily across the threshold of the door on a throw rug. Merry watched the cat for a second as it stretched, flexing its paws and giving a wide yawn. I don’t know how you can just lay there like the sun was shining down on you; it’s downright freezing in here.

Merry shook her head and turned away from the cat to continue on her journey down the hall. Flipping the heater up a few notches until she heard it kick on, she headed for the kitchen and the coffee maker. She would have a very long list of things to do today; this was of course the holiday season when everyone and everything was in a rush. Pulling out her agenda from a bag next to the counter, she flipped through the pages. Done, done, and done! Most of the items on the list had already been taken care of; only one item was left staring up at her from the pages, call mom and dad to let them know she would not be coming home for Christmas this year. She would have gladly of given up that one item to have to repeat all of the rest on the list. May as well be getting this one over with. she thought. With any luck or at least she hoped, she would get the answering machine.

No such luck, her father answered the phone on the first ring. Hello dad, I have some bad news for you, I won’t be coming home for Christmas this year. Better to get it all out at once, she thought.

Merry no, your mother and I don’t get to see you much as it is; we were really looking forward to your stay.

I know dad, but the weather is not the best here. There aren’t very many flights leaving, and most have already been canceled. This was the truth after all.

I think Jack has something to do with this, he always has tried my patience.

Jack just so happened to be the very Jack Frost that dad felt was nipping at his nose right about now.

Dad, you can’t blame Jack Frost for every snow storm we have. Well maybe he could, the man actually could be a bit irritating, she thought. I don’t believe Jack did this intending to keep me from coming to see you. said Merry

A ten second pause came from the other end of the line. I know what to do Merry, when I make my run in a couple of nights, I can swing by and pick you up in the sleigh. It’s been a long time since you have done a run with your old dad, and don’t worry about the weather, those reindeer can get through any kind of climate you throw at them.

Before she could even say a word, her father was already rushing to end the call. Honey, we’ll stick to these plans, and I can’t wait to see you. I have to go; it’s the busy season you know.
