    About Megan Ryder

    Chapter One

Sadie Jones pulled up to the log cabin inn that doubled as her family’s home and let the feeling of home and peace steal over her. She had never minded growing up in an inn. Having guests and people around was part of being a Jones, and she loved hearing stories of where everyone had come from, the places they had seen and how their lives differed from small town Martinsburg, Montana. Sometimes, she daydreamed about visiting those places just like the guests who came to her inn and experiencing life in a whole different way. When opportunity knocked and she got the chance to go to college in Portland, Oregon, she grabbed it and never looked back.

Opportunity wasn’t always golden though, as she quickly learned.

Now she was home indefinitely and trying to right the wrongs from her past and find a new path. The Silver Creek Inn had been in their family since Sadie’s great-great-grandfather had come out to mine for silver and decided to stay for the land. When times got tough, her father made some adjustments, selling off some land and creating the inn and guesting portion of their property for people who came to Martinsburg to ski and hike. Sometimes guests stayed in the inn, like a bed-and-breakfast, but more often, guests stayed at various cabins scattered around the property so they could have privacy, especially if they had children. But her parents were getting on in years and soon, her and her brother Carl would have to decide if they were going to step up and take over.

Which brought Sadie home for Christmas, and longer, to a place she had never thought she’d return to.

She sighed and stared at the sprawling log cabin home she’d grown up in, the snow in piles from the most recent storm, so unlike the rainy Portland she’d just left. She stared at the mountains in the distance and felt the tension in her muscles drain away. There were mountains outside of Portland and she hiked as often as she could but it hadn’t been the same and her ex swore he was allergic to the outdoors. Montana was home, even if she had a lot of complications to deal with.

A solid rapping on the window startled her, and she turned to see the grinning face of her older brother staring at her. He backed up, and she opened the door, sliding out onto the gravel driveway, as the December cold bit through the winter coat that had been adequate for Portland but wasn’t even close for Montana.

Carl grabbed her in a bear hug, lifting her off the ground. Wondered when you’d get here. Thanks for coming out.

His tone was sober, if regretful over the reason for her visit. Hey, I’m only sorry I couldn’t come sooner. Besides, it kind of worked out, to be honest. I think I might hang around for a while, if you can stand to have me here. She paused. How is he?

Carl glanced up at the house and angled his body away
