Dear Reader…
Welcome back to Haven, the retirement home for immortals. It’s a beautiful small town populated by vampires, faeries, demigods, and titans, all of whom share an uneasy detente. The violence they can’t use against one another is fully invested in gossip and trying to get a better deal on turnips at the farmer’s market.
In the heart of it all naps Mr. Poe, a magical cat who can shapeshift into a human boy, read minds, and solve mysteries with the best of them.
If this is your first dip into my universe, welcome! If this peek into The Descentverse is interesting and not too frustratingly confusing, you may be interested in trying one of my many free books.
If you’re a Descentverse regular, welcome back! I hope you brought your yarn bowl.
Happy reading.

The Case of the Missing Vase
Three things in life are inevitable: death, taxes, and the supremacy of felines. It was no coincidence that my three-soul detective team was made entirely of the breed. Although I may have appeared human, with gangly limbs and eerily dexterous hands, at my core I was a housecat.
You can’t have that in here,
said Mrs. Cotter, the owner of the hair salon. When she said that,
she was looking at the small white bundle in my arms—the second member of my detective team. Although the stylist was a withered old brownie who resembled a mossy rock, she had the nerve to seem repulsed by the sight of a kitten in her shop.
The residents of Haven—a retirement village for immortals to escape the bustle of mortal life—had no clue their problems were being resolved by a shapeshifting cat. But one of my team had no ability to disguise herself.
I’m afraid she is essential to my process.
Louisa May was four months old. Her fur was as white as mine was black, and her inquisitive golden eyes were closed in slumber. Her legs dangled over my humanlike forearm, which often served as a hammock for naptime.
Some of my customers have allergies,
said Mrs. Cotter, flustered in the face of such refusal.
Sorry about the kid,
Cèsar Hawke said, taking her aside. He’s not real good at talking to people. Anxious type. The kitten’s his security blanket, you know what I mean?
He gave Mrs. Cotter a bashful smile, rubbing the back of his neck. I couldn’t leave the kid at home. He’s my friend’s nephew, and I promised I’d watch him.
As transparent as this simple-minded lie sounded to my intelligent mind, Mrs. Cotter accepted it. Her mouth folded into a moue of sympathy.
Such deception was the reason I
