    INTRODUCTION

Many times, cooking for children turns out to be a burdensome and complicated task. Being able to find a balance between a healthy diet and a rich and nutritious one is a challenge that we, parents have to face every day.

To be able to keep our children healthy and with an appropriate weight, we must foster good eating habits in them. As parents, we ought to set a good example for them while they are children: we should offer them a good variety of foods, be patient while they get used to them, eat with the whole family sitting at the table, include nutritious foods in school lunches, etc.

Thus, in order for our children to grow healthy, the quality and quantity of foods imply a daily task on our part.

We should sometimes refrain ourselves from eating food that we like, which might end up being beneficial for us. This will help children agree to eat dishes that they usually reject and understand that they need them to have an appropriate diet.

Some other times we will have to make decisions that will probably infuriate the children, such as cutting down the amount of time they spent in front of the TV or the computer or reducing the number of sodas and the amount of junk food they consume.

The pages of this book propose recipes that combine necessary ingredients and enjoyable dishes for children to grow strong and healthy.

    ADVICE FOR PARENTS

    Suggestions and information

Foster children’s interest in healthy food. Cook with them, explain to them the benefits of a healthy diet, etc.

From the breastfeeding stage until adolescence, calcium consumption is fundamental to form strong bones.

It is unusual for children to need calcium, but should they not consume dairy products, such as cheese or yoghurt, or drink milk, they might need to take supplements.

Vitamin D is fundamental from the breastfeeding stage until adolescence. Daily minimum consumption should be 0,005 mg.

Set a good example. Eat healthy foods in an enjoyable atmosphere; practice physical exercise, play with your children, this will have a beneficial impact in your own health and weight.

Ponder your feelings and reflect on the commentaries that you make on your own weight and body image.

Talk to your child about the benefits that being more active and eating healthier have over our health.

Acknowledge that there is not an ideal body or shape. Talk to you children about the changes that their bodies will have while they grow.

If there are obesity problems in the family, explain to them the link between genes and lifestyle.

Have healthy food, such as fruit and vegetables, handy.

Be positive and support your children.

Try to involve the whole family in having a healthy lifestyle.

Do not let food become a struggle for power or a means of rewarding or punishing.

Talk to your children about their school, their grades, their friends and their likes.

Find, together with your son, a sport or physical exercise that he enjoys and be good at.

Do not compare you children with other children or with their friends.

    Accept and recognize their achievements.

    A balance diet should have:

50 to 60% of the total caloric value that comes from simple carbohydrates: sugar, cereal and bananas.

    12 to 15% of proteins.

    25 to 30 % of fats
