This novel is based on an incident, which according to my knowledge happened some time ago.
However, it is just pure fiction and its correlation to real life is purely coincidental and circumstantial.
Prologue
Action of this tale takes place not a long time ago when trains were moved by steam engines. Those times were very nice. Maybe, for some people were filled with romantic memories but most definitely with smoke pollution.
Story is about a small boy, less than 5 years old, who decided to make a trip by the train, all alone, just to visit his close relatives who lived in another city. Normally, there is no possibility that something like this could happen but this story is not about normal circumstances. What happened to him? Good question. Was he safe? Have to read this book to find it out. What good and bad situations or adventures he encountered.
Chapter One
1. A need to have a trip.
One day, a small boy decided to pay a visit to a family member who lived in a distant town. He was a little familiar with the way trains operate from the past train rides he took with his family. In his early years, as he lay in bed about to fall asleep, he imagined a single train within a large train station, one with a powerful steam engine that produced large amounts of smoke through its chimney, steam vapours all around it and made characteristic sounds, which can be attributed to steam engine only. In this dream, everything was so real, to the point where he felt he was actually there in the train station and seeing the majestic train with his own eyes.
What’s the problem?
he asked himself. Just go to the train station, hop into one of the train wagons, and go. It’s that simple.
he summarized.
Ever since he could remember, he had the freedom to go wherever he desired without any restrictions. He lived in a small safe town after all, where everyone knew each other.
It’s another trip I can make,
he concluded.
As he wandered about, he had the impulse to head towards the train station, which was pretty far away.
It was summer time. The day was warm. Sun was shining. It was a perfect day to make a trip. He wore summer clothes. On his feet, he wore summer sandals without socks.
In the beginning, walking was easy because the street he was on had sidewalks; however, as he progressed, he encountered parts of the road that were under construction, which made walking more difficult. The town was renovating the street including its sidewalks. Instead of a paved sidewalk, the boy was walking on yellow fine sand. The sand was loose, dry and was getting into his sandals very easily when he stepped on it. So, occasionally he had to stop and remove these sand grains out of his sandals. It was some trouble but nothing could stop him. He kept on going.
Finally, the boy approached the train station building, but faced another obstacle. The train station was located on top of a big steep hill. The only way to get to the building was to climb up stairs that went straight up. The stair’s steps were a little too tall for the boy. But nothing could stop him now, not when he was this close to his destination. Finally, he got to the top of the stairs. On the side of the building, he noticed a passage, which guided him to the big long platform.
He remembered that trains came to that platform to pick up people and take them to places they desired to go. He would just have to wait for the train’s arrival. He thought, When the train stops, then get in and the train will take me to the place I want to go. It is so simple.
There were some people on the station platform, but no one bothered him. He would have to be patient and wait until the train shows up. Just wait.
Chapter Two
2. On the train.
It took a long time, but the train finally arrived. The boy patiently waited until it stopped. He saw the wagon’s doors open. Some people were coming out through the open doors and some were getting in. So, the boy got into the wagon through the nearest open door.
The boy finally was inside. The wagon had a long corridor, which provided easy access to the wagon’s compartments. He started to walk across this corridor. Meantime, the train’s steam engine whistled and the whole train began moving. His feet felt the wagon’s floor vibrate as the train moved.
Finally going,
the boy thought to himself. He was too short to see anything through the wagon corridor windows. However, when he went into one of the wagon’s compartments, the window there was different. It was wider and taller. Under this window, there was a little table attached to the wall. So, the boy sat on the bench close to the window and saw the landscape move. It was fantastic! He always sat by the window, when he was traveling with his parents. The compartment was pretty large. It had two benches, opposite to each other. One was facing the traffic motion of the wagon, the other opposite to it. Each bench could easily accommodate three grownup passengers, so all together 6 people may stay in this compartment/cabin or even eight but then it would be a little too tight. Behind those benches were walls reaching up to the wagon's ceiling and on top of those walls, shelves were installed, a place for passengers to keep their luggage like suitcases, bags or other personal belongings. Opposite to the big window was another wall in which were located, a slide door with reasonable size glass window and two skinny windows, each on the opposite side of the doorframe. The door could be closed to provide more privacy to passengers. Wagon had a lot of such compartments along its corridor. The Sliding door was open and nobody was there when the boy entered this particular cabin. Boy noticed that the wagon went faster, because the view in the window was moving faster on top of that the frequency of characteristic sound produced by the wagon's wheels increased. It sounded like a big mechanical clock out of control. Clickety-clack, tick-tock, clickety-clack, tick-tock, clickety-clack, tick-tock, coming faster and faster. Clickety-clack, tick-tock. So, the boy was sitting quietly by the window and observed that view intensely. All the pictures in the window were changing so fast and so smoothly. He was totally fascinated and mesmerized by it. First were fields, they come and then go away. Then the same thing happened to a group of trees,
