Introduction

Addiction to porn is increasing more than ever before.

Lots of people are searching for a remedy to this seemingly unstoppable

addiction.

As general awareness of the problem has increased, there is also an increase

in the rate at which porn addiction is spreading in all walks of life and across

different age groups which indicate a problematic trend that is unlikely to be

reversed.

Although the actual causes of addiction to pornography have not changed

significantly over the years, what has changed is the increasing rate of

pornography addiction which can be linked to three causes.

The three A's of pornography addiction are availability, anonymity and

affordability.

The internet and the media have brought these three together, and for some

people, this combination can have unfortunate consequences.

Availability- Before the advent of the internet, porn could only be viewed

through magazines and VHS tapes.

These pornographic sources were very easy to access because magazines have

been available in convenience stores for many years or just as easily through

the mail.

Playboy magazine, perhaps the best known and most common of all

pornographic publications were launched in 1953 when social norms and

values were very different from today.

In the year 1950, it was unlikely that a married person would be able to keep a

box of pornographic magazines without hiding it from family members.

An addict with cravings and urges even had more problems because of his

obsession with pornographic materials.

Borrowing, buying and watching VHS tapes was a little more complicated than

buying and hiding a magazine in a paper bag.

They had to go to the adult section or the porn room of a video store and

borrow or buy the video, take it home and keep it hidden.

Then they had to find privacy to watch the videos alone without the intrusion

of family members.

The potential pornographic viewer or addict had to plan and find a private time

to keep the tapes he bought from the video store hidden from others.

While a porn addict can be creative and detailed in hiding his activities, barriers

like the ones above have made it very difficult for many to watch porn.

This has made participating in the activity much more difficult, therefore

deterring a few others from becoming porn addicts.

Everything has now changed because of the availability of the internet and

computers.

It only takes a few seconds to connect from work, home or a personal device to the computer. Identity is also hidden, which also facilitates porn addiction.
