Introduction
Afriend who has done various spiritual studies over several decades expressed disappointment that he has yet to hear the voice of God. In contrast, many others within his study groups claim with confidence that they have. Despite all his years of attending worship, studying scripture, and reading inspirational spiritual stories, he felt that something was missing.
I asked my friend what he meant by hearing the voice of God. He was thinking in the literal sense of a sound coming from outside the body. He was expecting to get a clear message, most likely from a male voice, coming from outside of him. I suggested that most people probably don’t have that particular experience, but rather are counting the quiet voice of guidance within as God speaking. Maybe some are counting the serendipity of having all things line up in what appears on the surface to be a marvelous coincidence. He didn’t think so and proceeded to give me an example of a woman who physically heard the Lord with her own ears. It was a great story, and that was the type of experience that he wanted.
I shared with my friend that I haven’t heard an actual voice outside of me that I equated as God directly speaking. Still, I do have a few personal experiences that point to getting communication or help from Beyond.
The particular example I used was met with him humming the theme to The Twilight Zone and teasing me that I must have had too much alcohol that day, even though he knows I don’t drink. That didn’t encourage me to continue telling him more of my stories, but it didn’t detract from my belief. I knew that I was on to something. God, the Universe, has been communicating and providing help in various forms. It happens for all of us, whether we are aware of it or not.
Until recently, I’ve only occasionally pulled one of my experience tales from my mind’s bookshelf and dusted it off to share with a pal when the topic arose. Even though I valued my experiences, I mostly viewed them as strange, entertaining, random events. I had a moment of revelation, if you will, with vivid images from my past quickly coming to me, overlapping and rearranging. Although my life didn’t flash before my eyes, about a dozen experiences did. I could detect an interconnection, a spiritual thread linking my experiences, and all at once was aware of a more profound religious significance behind them. That recognition left me with an increased sense of peace and happiness.
Immediately after having this self-revelation, my ah-ha
moment, I felt compelled to write my experiences down in the format of a book. My mind balked at this project, however. It sounded like a lot of possibly unpleasant work. Plus, I only had enough material for about fifteen pages, not a book, or so I thought. Nevertheless, I felt strongly urged and kept returning to the idea. I interpreted this as God, the Universe, guiding me and offering the help I would need to write my tales down for you. My ultimate hope is to provide comfort, inspiration, or food for thought for deepened faith.
I’m going to recount my oddest, most unusual experiences that point to the existence of something beyond what our society usually teaches us is within the realm of possibility. I believe they indicate something supernatural or paranormal. All of the stories are true and are my personal experiences or those of a family member that I repeatedly heard when growing up.
Maybe you’re like my friend and don’t feel that you have heard the voice of God. I bet you have, just in a different form than you anticipated. Perhaps while reading my personal stories, some of your own memories will resurface. Possibly you’ll be more attuned to recognizing your fortuitous and serendipitous moments in the future. Then again, maybe you are one of those who already have your own set of examples of God speaking. Whichever is the
