Chapter One

Ridiculous! How did a grown man travel so far from mature sensibility to something akin to a teenaged goo-goo-eyed crush? Austin Curtis wasted the past hour as he puttered between mindless, mostly unnecessary tasks while he surreptitiously snuck glances at his customer, Wyatt Andersen. Not that they were strangers, really. In a small town, the concept of being unknown ranked on the scale of foreign, inconceivable, and totally impossible. Strangers seemed to possess a special glow about them that elicited the standard comment You ain’t from roun’cheer, air yeh? a rhetorical question.

They’d volunteered at the same community events. They attended various entertainments at the same time. Austin didn’t have the courage to send a Facebook Friend Request, but they were in the realm of casual acquaintances in the social milieu of Macclenny’s up and coming. However, opportunity continued to be fickle and there had not been a single moment where the two had connected alone to be able to talk. Perhaps that was a sign. Austin knew Wyatt was smart, funny, loyal, devoted to their community, and a wise, successful businessman. What he didn’t know became the pinnacle lynchpin to Austin’s avoidance of future embarrassment, was Wyatt Andersen gay?

Wyatt, a local real estate agent, could practice his business from anywhere in town. So, for the past week and a half, he’d chosen to spend his mornings at The Ground Up, where he drank coffee and generally caused Austin to lose his mind. The brain disconnect wasn’t entirely because of the things one would expect, like the real estate agent being the single most eligible bachelor in town with a diversified stock portfolio, executive home on the river, and choice of fancy cars to drive.
