HIGH SCHOOL HUSTLE
Chapter One
Candy and Soda Trafficking
To think this all started with a fundraiser. I went from a regular student to one of the richest kids in the school. My freshman year I had realized that I could make loads of money just by selling candy.
The middle of my sophomore year I convinced myself to actually go and attempt to sell candy. So one November night I went to my local super market. I purchased four packs of Hershey bars and four packs of kit-Kats. Each pack cost three dollars and contained six bars. I sold each bar for a dollar, which is a hundred percent profit. The next day I sold all eight packs. So I made forty eight dollars out of twenty four dollars’ worth of items.
Now this was only the beginning. What people have to understand is that you can’t just say I’m going to sell X amount of candy because it all depends on the costumer. The costumer has X amount of cash and is willing to spend X percent of that on the X amount of products.
Basically, you don’t know how much you will make one day because maybe all your costumers have money on them, or none of your customers have money on them. All you have to do is sell, but sometimes that doesn’t even work. All you can really do is hope costumers have money and they want to buy your products.
I made about twenty dollars to fifty dollars a day selling candy. Selling candy is supposed to be illegal in New York City schools. But the trick is to realize which teachers play by the rules and which ones don’t. Which, believe me, makes life a lot easier.
But I wasn’t an idiot. I had middle men; I would give them five dollars for every forty five dollars they made. I would make about twenty to forty dollars off of them a day. My first middle man was actually a girl, my ex-girlfriend at the time. It’s actually pretty funny if you think about it, her name was Lisa. She was a sweet looking girl whose parents were from Bangladesh. She was about five-four with a regular body but a huge frame. I asked her to work for me the middle of my sophomore year. I thought she would decline but surprisingly she agreed to.
That same day, I asked a friend of mine, Kamil, if he wanted to make five dollars. I went into detail with him about what he would be doing and he agreed. After he agreed I went to the store and bought the products, and the supplies.
I brought more packs of chocolate than I could imagine, and I bought four twelve packs of soda cans for two dollars and fifty cents per pack. I sold each can for a dollar, which was over a four hundred percent profit. I then packed them in bags I bought at a dollar store. I tried fitting forty five products each valued at a dollar into each bag, but it was very complicated. I rearranged the products about five times until 45 products fit into the bags. I placed the rest of the products in my bag.
The next day I woke up with ambition, waiting to sell the products and make money. I arrived at school holding the three bags in my left hand, while I had my schoolbag on my back and my ID on my right hand. Both Kamil and Lisa had Physical Education with me which was also my first class. I gave them the bags and I reminded them that when they wanted another bag they had to give me forty dollars.
The first few days you sell you have a lot of adrenaline pumping through your body. The first day I realized I couldn’t sell all the candy in one day. It all depended on how much money the costumer had.
I later realized that it would take about two days to sell all that candy. So in two days I would make about a hundred dollars. The first week I made about two hundred fifty dollars. I saved all of the money in a safe. I also kept a record of all my earnings in a ledger.
The next week was a whole different story. I was at the store where two kids I know Kobe and Danny saw me.
Hey Gabe what’s up?
My friend Danny said. He was a tall skinny blond kid. He wasn’t the brightest kid, but I knew I could use him for my own advantage.
Hey Danny I’m fine, what about you?
I replied. As he was about to reply, Kobe came by.
Hey guys, what are you up to?
He asked. Kobe was the exact opposite of Danny. He was independent, smart, African American, and a brunet. I could have really used him too, but I needed to convince him to help me. Both Danny and Kobe worked as baggers for the supermarket I bought my products for.
Hey guys I’m just buying products to sell at school. You guys want to help me? I’ll give you five dollars for every forty five dollars you make. You guys might get a four month suspension and a fine if you get caught, but at the same time you’ll make some money.
As I said this Danny was quick to say yes, which worried me because he didn’t seem to think it through. Kobe on the other hand was quiet, thinking it through, I was so sure he would say no by the face expressions he was making.
I’m in, but if I get caught, I’m bringing you down with me.
He told me as he gave me a serious look. I stared into his eyes knowing that he didn’t want to do this, and the only reason he is agreeing is because of our friendship. We were friends for a few years and we grew close.
Okay it’s a deal.
I replied.
I bought my products and two more bags for Danny and Kobe. To me it was a little funny how no one had left me to start their own business. Or why no one threatened to tell on me.
The first month my business made about one thousand five hundred dollars net. I was bringing in nearly double that but I had to re-invest in my company. I decided to give my Business a name. I thought of name after name but nothing really made sense. I thought, why not use acronyms. So I went with C.A.S.T., Candy and Soda Trafficking.
It was December 22nd and the start of my Christmas vacation. The New Year came by quick. My social status was high. I had just gone to a party and got a girl’s number. She was kind of cute so I called her up.
Hey Ashley, this is Gabe, from the party.
I told her.
Oh yeah Gabe I remember you. You’re the Hustler right?
She asked.
"Yea that’s me, I was
