    G uess what's happening today? asked Nick as he walked up to Indigo, who was snoozing near the big gum tree.

    I don't care, replied Indigo, not bothering to look at his approaching paddock companion. He didn't care what was happening today, unless it involved food. And, he doubted Nick was coming to tell him news about their meal.

    I'm getting new shoes.

    Indigo's head turned to face Nick. Are you sure?

    Nick nodded. The human said to me yesterday, good news, my friend, the farrier is coming to put shoes on you, and then maybe I can take you for a little walk with your stringhalt getting better.

    Am I getting new shoes? Indigo asked, staring at his feet.

    Getting shoes wasn't his favorite thing to do. In fact, he disliked it about as much as a visit from the vet.

    Firstly, there was the matter of him being hot shod. The sound of the flame in the gas burner the farrier used these days was enough to make the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. It was like a constant bzzzz. At least that’s how it sounded to him: a swarm of annoying insects.

    When the hot metal shoe was pressed against the flat of his hoof, he was sure he would lose half his hoof due to the immense heat.

    The sensation was anything but pleasant.

    And that was just the start. Not to mention the fact there were three more feet to go. Each foot presented a similar experience. Each time Indigo thought his foot would melt to the bone, leaving him a cripple.

    Okay, he was overreacting. So far he had not suffered any injury during the process. No wait, he was sure the hot metal had once singed some of his hair near his fetlock.

    By the way, the pushing of hot metal against his blank hoof was only the first painful step in the shoeing process. There was the pulling off of the shoe, which Indigo likened to the roots of a tree coming out of the ground.
