    Introduction

The term hydroponic comes from Latin and means working water. This is an ingenious method that uses no soil at all to grow plants. Most people think that the term hydroponics is synonymous with growing marijuana but they couldn't be more wrong. In fact, most commercial lettuce and several other vegetables are grown primarily using hydroponics. It's a popular and easy way to grow food and plants when you simply don't have the soil or garden to spare.

Hydroponics works well as a growing method because you're giving the plant exactly what it needs and nothing else. On a molecular and genetic level, your plants cannot be any better simply because you're meeting their every need to the maximum.

The plants are grown in an inert medium or suspended directly into the nutrient solution. This is a pH adjusted, balanced mixture of all the soluble minerals and elements that your plants need for growth. It means that these nutrients are already in the right chemical makeup for your plants to take them up easier than with soil, even if it's the perfect organic soil, it just can't compare with a nutrient solution. Since your plants won't have to spend energy converting their food they can use it entirely to grow and fruit.

Hydroponic growing isn't organic which is why many shy away from it believing that organic is better. Even with the best soils, it's almost impossible to create ideal plant nutrition because of the amount of micronutrients and trace elements that your plant needs. When it comes to genetic potential, there's just no way to create perfect soil conditions so that plants reach their perfect potential, especially if you're dealing with common garden soil or overused farming land.

It's not a complicated process and thanks to books like this one you too can grow hydroponically at home whether it's a few heads of lettuce or food for your whole family.

Chapter 1 – What is Hydroponics?

As a subset of hydroculture hydroponics grows plants in a wholly aquatic environment. This means that there's no soil, ever. For anyone who loves both innovation and gardening it's the perfect hobby to tinker with, and for those concerned about their family's food safety it's the perfect way to make sure the food they eat is healthy and free of commercial pesticides. It's a modern way
