Deferred Divorce II Berenice's Dream - Daniel Canals Flores

This novel would not have been possible without you. I love you.

    Acknowledgements

I would like to thank the following people for their collaboration. It is not easy to write a chapter, weekly, without any kind of network or premeditated plot. The only support has been the people around me, who have had the patience to read and correct the work as it came out.

Mª Jose A. P., for her unconditional support, the correction of style and the creation of the framework of this novel.

Rafael Blasco Lopez for the psychological support, the correction of style and his fine irony when criticizing the work.

Historias Pulp, María Larralde and Elmer Ruddenskjrik, for the creation of this fabulous cover, the layout of the texts and their constant and unconditional support in all my works.

Isabel Ripoll, for her zero reading of the novel as it emerged.

    Foreword by the author

Deferred Divorce II Berenice’s Dream is the continuation of the novel Deferred Divorce. This second part has to be understood as a return to the past of some of the characters in the first book. If the story provokes the same interest that caused the first one, it will continue with a third part in which I will reveal more unknowns about this strange story.

In this remote past, I will mention some previous characters and introduce new ones, all wrapped up in that mysterious halo with which I like to adorn my stories with a little suspense and intrigue. Also, fear...

If you want to know the first part of this story (Deferred Divorce) can find it on Amazon both in digital ebook and paper version.

I want to show my gratitude to all of you who encourage me to write, help me to develop my career and, above all, to those of you who read what I write, spending your time with my stories. Thanks you for reading me!

    Chapter I

Berenice had the same recurring dream since she found the ring on the beach when she was a child. She saw herself alone, locked in a glass palace from which she could never leave. Like a butterfly held captive in a lamp crashing unfailingly against the walls over and over again.

In the dream she ran barefoot, looking for a desperate way out. Only a sheet covered her body, floating around her. When she reached one of the walls, she watched a small child through the glass, who looked at her tenderly, asking for a hug, but could not stop. She turned and ran to the next wall, down a long corridor; always in the same hellish loop.

That morning, she woke up with a strange feeling. She discovered some blood stains on the sheets. Her mother told her that she had become a woman. Also, she looked at her very seriously and told her that from that moment on, she could get pregnant if a man came too close. Young and naive, she decided that this would never happen to her. She kept remembering the child from her dream.

    A few years later...

Berenice became famous, in the surrounding villages, for her beauty. Blonde with long hair and unforgettable blue eyes that hypnotized those who crossed her path. Nobody was able to deny her anything and many villagers dreamed of being able to marry her. Although, her existence was not going to end up, being the wife of just any villager. Fate had a series of surprises in store for her that, perhaps, if she had known them, she would have preferred to spend the rest of her life caring for a peasant husband.

The fame of her beauty soon reached the ears of the powerful Count of Malton, owner and possessor of all the surrounding lands, who soon invited her to one of the usual dances they used to hold at the castle.

He was a kind and generous lord. He was married and the father of two marriageable children, Marius and Leonard. The first was destined to be the heir to the land. The second was going to offer his existence to the service of the Church, as commanded by family tradition. The count hoped to be able to marry Marius off to a beautiful lady of the nobility, but so far no woman had made a dent in the spirit of the first-born; hence the celebration of the continuous dances and festivities.

One winter evening, with the guests gathered in the impressive ballroom of the castle, Berenice made her entrance. She was wearing a simple dress that she had found in a chest, owned by her grandmother. With her mother’s help she had arranged it, making it suitable for the occasion.

The murmurs soon spread through the immense hall and all eyes fell on that beautiful creature. The ring, with the red stone set shining on her hand, gave her an air of mystery and elegance. In addition to her beauty and the simplicity of her dress, she seemed almost unreal; from another world.

Marius was impressed with the beauty of that unknown woman and did not take long to invite her to the first dance of the festive day. The count, satisfied with the interest shown by his son, commented with his wife:

It seems that Marius has finally been touched by Cupid’s arrows, my dear.

Your eldest son is worthy of your trust. It was only a matter of time before he fell in love with some beautiful woman. I swear to God that he couldn’t have chosen a better match. Who is she, my dear?

She’s a villager from our land, not a noble, but her family has always been noted for their honesty and industriousness. I think that with a proper education, which I am sure you could take care of personally, she would make good consort for our precious son.

Let’s not go ahead with events, dear, and enjoy the evening with our guests.

Marius was dancing with Berenice, at that time, with the approval of those present. Well, almost everyone, as Leonard watched the scene from one of the upper balconies cursing his brother’s fate and his own.

During the evening, Berenice did not leave Marius for a single moment. She had also been pleasantly impressed by the tall, stocky gentleman, elegantly dressed and the deference with which he
