A Distrustful Baron - Amaya Evans

    Review

Pippa Comte is a beautiful woman of Italian descent, whose father is one of the most important men in New York, due to the enormous fortune he made with much sacrifice years ago. She has been given the best things since she was born and is a woman accustomed to luxury and whims. She is about to reach her fairytale end, marrying the man of her life, when due to circumstances of destiny, the wedding is suspended and her father makes arrangements to marry her with a nobleman in England, whom she fears and that He seems to hate her.

Alan Sullyard, is the new heir for a few months, the title of Baron Latimer that belonged to his late uncle. Until recently he was a retired captain of the army with a modest pension that allowed him to survive without pretensions, luxuries and a horrible scar on his face, which has become a permanent memory of his passage through military life. One day he meets Pippa and is enchanted with his beauty and elegance. Not even in his craziest fantasies can a woman like that be imagined for him, although that doesn't mean he can't dream of having her. She does not even determine it when she meets him, however a few days later, Pippa's father makes an offer that he cannot refuse.

    Chapter 1

    ––––––––

Pippa entered the room where his mother and his paternal aunt were almost jumping happily

    - Mother look - the newspaper showed him - they have made a whole page in the social events section about David's commitment to me.

    - Calm down daughter, calm down. You can't lose your composure no matter how excited you are.

    - Oh, aunt look how beautiful the ring he gave me is splendid

Yes, my daughter, you are really going to marry an exceptional and good-natured man, just as your father loved him.

Annetta did not make a good face at the comment but she let it go. It was her husband's sister and she could not tell him anything.

This looks like a fairy tale, I never thought I found my prince charming until I met David. It pleases me in everything and treats me like I'm a princess. I'm sure we'll be happy when we get married.

    - So, it will be dear and now show me that beautiful dress

    - I can't aunt, remember what they say nobody can see the bride's dress until the moment she is in the church. I don't want bad luck to fall on my marriage.

It's true, she said smiling indulgently. But then at least tell me what preparations you have made for the great event.

Everything, she said excitedly, we have made preparations for a bridal breakfast to be made after the ceremony with delicious delicacies made by a French chef. I wanted my mother to take care of the food and be Italian however my father he did not want. He said that what was fashionable and elegant was French and that is why we are going to give a banquet that will be like royalty.

Your father knows about those things, if he wants it that way, please him. Anyway, soon I cannot tell you anything because you owe it to your husband.

    It's true, he replied dreamily.

I've been told you have English relatives.

Oh yes, he began to clap softly, "his father is English, and he came here years ago, then he was sent to complete his education there and again he returned to America because he was in love with David's mother, with whom he married sometime later. He has told me that among his ancestors there is a duke and a marquis.

By God, but it is a whole family of the nobility, said the excited woman, how lucky you have been, honey.

I know, no match hits my David's ankles.

The afternoon was beautiful and Pippa wanted to go to a store to buy a small gift for her friend Antonia who was turning years old. Walking through the bookshelves, trying to see something he will like, he listened unwittingly to a conversation between two women.

    - Have you heard what happened to the Alden family?

    - Oh yes, it's terrible! Fortunately, they have had the good fortune that the Comte heiress is so in love with him because apparently the rumors are true that the father's finances have been affected by the loss of three ships and the worst thing was that some outlaws in the territory where the Railroad of which they were shareholders passed, they dynamited the tracks recently and they say that that railway company is also bad - Poor, they have not gone well at all lately.

—The virgin appeared to them with that girl — they both laughed — Thank God for the dowry that Italian.

Pippa did not give credit to what they said, people were envious and loved to make gossip, anyway he would talk to David and ask him. He left the store somewhat muted. He worried that his father would hear those rumors.

Two nights later Giuseppe had attended an important society event with his wife and while Annetta took a moment to take a breath, Giuseppe went to talk to some acquaintances. Minutes later he returned with his wife and told him they were leaving for the house.

    - Why? Has something happened? - Annetta asked nervously.

Nothing woman, I can't tell you anything here. Wait for us to be in the carriage. When they were alone, he began to rant in the carriage.

    - I heard something terrible. They say that David's family has no weight, that they have run out of nothing and that they only look forward to our daughter marrying him in order to get the dowry and with her being able to live better.

    - Cannot be! I don't think they need money; they also have many businesses. They would have to be wrong with all of them, to be ruined.

    - I don't know but I think I'm going to find out. I don't want to be seen as an idiot's face and if Pippa is going to marry him it is precisely because of his social position, if they don't have it anymore, what's the use?

But our daughter loves him, she replied in anguish over what her husband suggested.

I don't give a damn if she loves him or not. When has it been seen that a woman's marriage is for love?

Annetta gave him absolutely right at that moment; her marriage had not been for love because she married Giuseppe very excited but he never saw her as anything other than a pretty face and a servant for him. Then when he gave his daughter and not a son, he passed it by recriminating it all the time, but then his tentacles went to Pippa and since he could not take advantage of it as his male heir, he used it to climb socially and that was what he was doing at that time, although she thought it was just a fairy tale.

Three days later, the marriage was canceled. Pippa cried in his room disconsolate by his father's decision. He still couldn't believe that David had cheated her that way and wouldn't have told him that his family is going so bad financially, however she loved him and was willing to overlook that. But his father did not, Giuseppe was in a rage to see that he had been fooled all the time making him think that everything was well, although what hurt him most was the money, he had spent on the wedding preparations. He forbade Pippa to see him again and when she begged him to let them marry exposing that with the desire to get ahead that David had and the good business ideas that he told her all the time, she knew they would get ahead but her father I didn't want to hear anything else and two days later Pippa was already packing to go to England.

David and she made a promise to wait and asked him to do everything possible not to marry because that will give him the margin of a few months to look for her, when he was already better economically. She said yes, although she knew that her father was not a normal man and was not interested in her daughter's feelings. He saw it as a currency and needs to use it for his future, to rise more and more position and be more powerful. That will not be achieved by marrying his daughter with a ruined family.

Alan Sullyard was listening to the lawyer who had come home that day to tell him that he was the only and legitimate heir to the title of Baron Latimer that previously belonged to his uncle. He never married and given that Alan's older brother had died of tuberculosis several years ago and he had not had children either now he was there listening as they listed the properties and the great list of creditors that his uncle had. As he saw it, it was a waste of time because he also had no children who could inherit that title or plan to have them. He thought sadly that no one would want to be married to a person like him, a disfigured who did not attract women with a handsome face but instead scared them. He did not know if he could have children, because he had fevers for a while when he was on a trip to India and was told that he could have affected his ability to father even though it was not safe, since he had met several men who had children after
