Dream 1 – Down to the River, with boats

Twigs and Twinkie were sitting together that morning by the swirling river.

The sun was getting higher and their backs were getting warm. The light played on the ripples and flashed into their eyes. They were two very happy teddy-bears.

You know Twinkie, said Twigs, I have been thinking, and then fell into silence.

    After a while, Twinkie replied,

    Pretty interesting, Twigs.

Their great thoughts were interrupted by the waving and greeting from two fishermen on the opposite side of the river; their welcome was returned by the Bears. They in turn were not there for any fishing, but rather to wave at the fish that came to smile at them from time to time as they broke water. The Bears tried to think when and where they would pop up. It was so much fun.

At the same time there was a lot happening all around them. The leaves in the many trees moved slowly in sympathy with the gentle wind which blew now and again. Their green colouring came in many shades, which contrasted with the blue of the sky. Occasionally there were little croaking noises from the small whirlpools, left behind on the river edges by the faster moving water. Yet it was difficult to know the difference between those and Twinkie sucking on his paws after dipping them into the honey-pot between them.

Luckily for Twigs there were more interesting sights and sounds, from the birds all around them. The shy Willow Warblers with their falling cadence of hoo-eet floated to their ears from across the water. At least that is what Twigs thought they were, because the range of similar Warblers was so confusing. Anyway the song came from the Willow tree opposite, so that was a good indication; although an invasion of Great and Blue Tits, with their constant chatter, soon scattered the softer tones.

Meanwhile, the Bears had been almost transfixed in watching the faster moving, clear water in the middle of the river. Here swam the trout in various sizes.

    Trout swimming in the River

The larger ones hogged the middle and more productive waters, waiting for the arrival of food from upstream, whilst the juniors jockeyed for position between them. Occasionally an arriving dace fish would be shooed away.

Both of these species, despite their obvious presence, were notoriously difficult to catch and it came as a bit of a surprise when a cry came from across the river as one of the anglers pulled a small trout from the waters. The Bears clapped their paws in appreciation, and the angler gave a low bow in reply. He unhooked the fish and gently returned it to the wild. Relative calm returned to the Bears. That is until.....

.....shouting came to their ears from upstream, and they could see little arms flailing with excitement. This was the signal from
