When Hannah set off to retrace her missing brother's footsteps, she found herself on a train. With nothing but his last cryptic message to guide her, she put her own life on hold.

Charlie stayed up most nights. Watching for the train that sometimes came with the thunder. Others may say he suffered. Broken. From the war. But Charlie knew what he saw.

Would destiny bring Hannah to her brother? And would she also find a love greater than any she had known before? If so, would it be real?

The Phantom Train - Kathryn Kaleigh

    Chapter 1

I'm sorry I'm not there. I'm somewhere outside of Charleston. But I think I've gone back in time. I don't know when I'll...

The countryside outside the Amtrak window passed in a blur of green and brown. The afternoon sun was bright, streaming in through the window, reflecting off her phone's screen.

Two teenagers sat in the seats behind her, giggling. A man two aisles up was having a conversation and he didn't seem very happy about something.

Hannah stared at the text message from her brother George.

The last message she'd gotten from him.

She had to scroll up a ways because she sent him a ton of messages after she got that one from him.

    None of hers were delivered.

The girls behind her had pulled out the strawberry lip gloss. It had been a long time since she'd worn strawberry lip gloss. It was something she looked forward to introducing her daughter to.

One day. Maybe in about twelve years. Probably sooner than that. The girls behind her sounded more like they were about nine years old.

She ran a hand reflexively over her flat stomach. Nine months was a long time to carry someone around.

    Almost a year.

If you count the recovery time, it might as well be a year.

I think I've gone back in time.

Hannah had examined those words backwards, forwards, and sideways.

Literally and figuratively. Until she'd given up.

She'd finally decided to go with what at least made sense. Her brother had been on his way to be with her.
