Introduction
In the same tradition as the first and second books in the series, this volume will cover a wide variety of toys, action figures, and games that were produced during the 1970s, with accompanying sample pictures for certain items in each line.
Ranging from the Pocket Super Heroes by Mego to Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the categories covered will help to reconnect those who lived through the era with their childhood memories, and give collectors a comprehensive guide to these wonderful remnants of the past.
Pocket Super Heroes - Projectors
Pocket Super Heroes
In 1979, the famous Mego toy company produced an action figure line based on superhero characters from both Marvel and D.C. comics that was called the Pocket Super Heroes. Produced in the 3 3/4ths inch size, no doubt due to the popularity of Star Wars figures at the time, they just didn't have the appeal, at least in my opinion, of the earlier produced 8 inch series by this same toy company.
With that information aside, it is interesting to note that this was actually Mego's second attempt to produce a smaller sized Super Hero line of action figures. However, unlike the earlier mid 1970s attempt with their Comic Action Heroes, these figures did not require a stand due to the fact that their legs were not bent like those of the CAH series.
Heads, accessories, and upper torsos were pretty much re-used from the CAH line for these figures, and earlier versions also used the perverse, bent right arm, which can't help but make any collector grin. However, eventually Mego learned from their mistake, and the figures were produced with both arms straight.
For the purpose of staying in line with the theme of this book, only the items dated 1979 will be listed, but please be aware that figures and vehicles from this line were actually made into the early 80s. In addition, the 1980 released figures, Aquaman, Captain America, Green Goblin, and Wonder Woman, usually command much more money than the 1979 releases, as do the vehicles produced in that later time frame.
Packaging styles for the carded figures varied. The first cards were red, and the final released white cards were not released until 1980. Sometime around 1979-1980 figures were released on rare denim cards. These were found primarily in other countries, but some speculate that they were released in limited numbers within the United States.
Although only 70s released figures/cards will be shown, let it be known that the denim cards are still up in the air. Copyright dates often say 1979 on these card types, although others state they weren’t released until 1980. Therefore, just in case I have decided to show a few examples of the denim cards as well.
