    Introduction- About Harbin

    Harbin, the capital city of Heilongjiang Province in the north-east of China, has long been known as the Ice City partly because of the freezing temperatures during the long winter months and also for its ice and snow festival held every year during late January and early February. Before visiting a new city, it is useful to learn a little of that city's history. The area around Harbin was the birthplace of the Jin (1115 until 1234) and the Qing (1644 until 1911) Dynasties. During the late 19th century, under Russian influence, the terminus of a railway from Russia was constructed here. After that, Harbin was home to over 160,000 foreigners from 33 countries to promote the development of capitalism in the area.

    For me, going to work in Harbin gave me an opportunity to discover another new country to add to those I had already discovered. Having previously lived in the French Alps, the cold of the winter in Harbin was to me, a completely new experience. My hope is that by your reading this book I can give you an insight into why I enjoyed my time in Harbin and that it offers encouragement for you to come and visit this amazing city.

    Before we begin with the attractions to the city of Harbin, here's some facts to share about the climate, local food, places to stay and of course the local transportation options.

    Transportation

    Harbin’s Railway Stations

    Harbin, now served by four railway stations, requires you need to ensure you proceed to the correct station when you have a train to catch as they are several miles away from each other. The main station Harbin Railway Station (City Railway Station) is in the city centre and its initial construction coincided with the arrival of Russian labourers in 1899. The station was further expanded in 1989 and then rebuilt in 2017, fully reopening in 2019. Harbin East Railway Station opened in 1934, the West station opened in 2012 for high speed trains only, and the
