About this ebook

Maya’s stay at the family’s country home proves to be a lot more strained than she ever imagined. Jay’s mother is a traditional, and strictly religious, Indian woman, who would never accept her son being gay. Added to this is the growing attraction between Maya and Rajiv, Jay’s older brother. Rajiv is finding it almost impossible to control his desire for Maya, even his mother has noticed this. Plus, he’s still convinced that she’s not what she appears to be – his brother’s girlfriend. The attraction between them is flaring out of control, with lies and deceit adding fuel to the fire . . ..

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I wish to thank my editors, Lauri Wellington and Faith Caminski, of Black Opal Books, for all their guidance and support.

To the author who influenced me most, from my early teens, Ms Anne Mather, a writer way ahead of her time. My work would not be what it is, were it not for her. Thank you for bringing excitement to a young teenager’s life.

A heartfelt thank you to my friend Karin Ades, who passed away soon after this book was published, not just for her knowledge and support, but for making me believe in myself.

And my sincere gratitude to my true friends (you know who you are) for your support and encouragement on this journey.

Last and most importantly, with love to my husband for believing in my work, and my daughter, for keeping me young.

    Part Two

Maya was having breakfast the following day when Jay telephoned. Rajiv had left for the office early that morning, she’d been informed, and was expected back around midday to drive her to Wiltshire.

Mrs Travis brought the cordless phone through to her, and she couldn’t help feeling like someone out of a Hollywood movie, sitting in the room that they’d dined in the night before, with the sun shining through the long windows, a spread of fresh fruit, cereal, crispy bacon, eggs, toast, coffee, and fruit juice set out just for her.

Maya, are you there? she heard Jay ask anxiously.

Jay, yes I’m here. How are you, darling?

Fine, I got your message yesterday saying that you’d arrived safely. He paused. Sorry I didn’t get back to you, but I’ve been preoccupied lately, as you can imagine.

That’s okay, Jay, she assured him. It’ll be much easier once we’re able to talk face-to-face.

Oh, Maya, it’s so good to hear your voice, he said with some enthusiasm. I can’t wait to see you. I need some normality around me and no one’s more normal than you, love.

I guess I’ll have to take that as a compliment. She laughed, wondering if Rajiv had been exaggerating his brother’s state of mind. He sounded quite upbeat to her. But seriously, Jay, how are you? Your brother seems worried.

Oh God, him and mother are driving me crazy. Worry, worry, worry. I think Indian people have perfected the art of worrying. I’ve been a bit low that’s all. You know it’s not very pleasant being dumped, or maybe you don’t know, he added with a bitter laugh. Bet you’ve never been dumped before. You’re far too beautiful.

Maya sighed, hearing the note of despair beneath his humorous tone, So you haven’t heard from him since leaving Edinburgh?

Not even a whisper, he answered tightly. But stuff him. It’s you I can’t wait to see. Only problem is we’ll have to wait another day.

But I thought your brother was driving me over today.

I know, I know, but he’s just called us from the office and there’s some kind of business meeting that’s taking longer than he expected—it’s always something with him—so you’ll be leaving early tomorrow morning, instead. He paused. Are you okay with that?

Yes, of course, I am, she said quickly, but another evening alone with Rajiv Maddox caused a shiver of nerves, or was it excitement, to course through her body.

So what did you think of my dearly beloved brother then? asked Jay, as if able to read her mind.
