Do not wait it out in the hopes that the symptoms might vanish on their own because they hardly ever do.
I have seen firsthand the damage PTSD is capable of. My sister dealt with this problem for a long time after an abusive relationship. Her problem worsened after I finished my business degree and opened up my coffee shop.
Soon, she was isolating herself and trying to push everyone out, including me. Some days, it took something very minor to trigger her, and I desperately searched for a way to help her recover. When she had an outburst of anger one evening, it all fell in place.
I knew at that point that it was time for me to take action, and I took up a psychology degree online on the side. With my degree and interaction with my sister, I was able to help her out of her predicament. It took almost two years to get her life back on track, but it was a fulfilling and learning experience for us as a family.
It took me years to earn my degree, but seeing what my sister went through, I wanted to better understand how human behavior works so I can ensure no one else experiences the same thing my sister did. With all of the information and experience I have attained over the years, I have helped many people through their condition and wish to help more people.
You and your loved one can be happy. There is indeed treatment for people living with PTSD, as there is an increase in the availability of PTSD treatment. According to PTSD treatment statistics, the results for treatment have been positive. A study also revealed that as many as 46% of individuals dealing with PTSD improved in the initial six weeks of starting psychotherapy. Researchers have also revealed that as much as 62% of individuals who are getting medication for the condition are showing improvement.
PTSD is a serious issue and one that should not be undermined. Even if you don’t have it, you can keep yourself informed to help someone you know get past this dark part of their lives.
Chapter 1:
Understanding Your State
As with any other condition a person can experience, the first thing you will have to do in order to find a cure is to understand PTSD. In this chapter, we will be looking into PTSD, including its symptoms, causes, and all other vital information you will require to understand the condition.
What is PTSD?
Post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD is a severe mental disorder that some individuals develop after a dangerous, shocking, or scary occurrence. These kinds of occurrences are known as traumas.
Once a person has experienced trauma, it is common to deal with anxiety, misery, and even fear. You may have memories that upset you or have problems sleeping. For typical individuals, these feelings fade over time, and things get better.
However, these feelings and thoughts remain in someone dealing with PTSD. They can last for months and even years, and they can become even more critical as time goes on.
PTSD can affect all aspects of your life, including your personal life and your life at work. It can also have an impact on your emotional and physical health. Still, with the right form of treatment, there is a chance for you to live the kind of life you desire.
How Does PTSD Happen?
When you experience a traumatic event, your body has a natural flight or fight
response. When this happens, it lets out stress hormones like norepinephrine and adrenaline to give you an energy surge. Then your heart begins to beat at a faster pace, and your brain pauses some of its normal tasks like storing short-term memories.
When this is working as it should, it is not a bad thing as it is how your body protects you from danger. But when you are dealing with PTSD, it can be a problem as it could cause your brain to stay stranded in danger mode. So even when there is no imminent danger, your brain remains on high alert, and your body keeps on sending out stress signals. This can result in PTSD symptoms.
PTSD tends to change your brain with time as it makes the area that controls your memory smaller. This area is known as the hippocampus. The possible alteration of the hippocampus by PTSD is one of the major reasons many professionals recommend that you get treated as soon as possible.
What are The Symptoms of PTSD?
You may experience numerous symptoms when dealing with PTSD. These could range from emotional numbness, feelings of guilt, angry outbursts, and so on. In some cases, you may stay away from
