The Adventures of Jimmy the Lighthouse Boy Episode One: Shipwreck Shoals

Once upon a time...
...On the Atlantic Ocean Coast near the old sea-faring town of Clamshell Cove, there lived the little happy Duffy family. There was Pa, a lighthouse keeper with a patch over one eye, and Ma, a local schoolteacher, and their young son named Jimmy. Their tiny house was right next to the big tower. This is the story of Jimmy Duffy’s first adventure.
1
Pa Duffy was once a strong, proud fisherman on a shrimp boat but had lost some of his vision due to a shipboard accident. What happened was that he and the other shrimpers had landed a big shark that got caught along with a net full of shrimp. The huge fish was what they called a trophy catch and would command a good price at the market. Filled with pride, the fishermen moved closer to get their picture taken next to it. The only problem was that the shark had a little life left in him. Without warning the dreaded fish swung its big tail around in one last show of strength and hit Shrimper Duffy smack in the right eye. It wasn’t pretty, that’s for sure.
After a visit to the eye doctor, the poor shrimper learned he would be blind in one eye and have to wear a patch over it like a pirate. This marked the end of his sailing days. He wasn’t sure what to tell his wife, Nellie, and young son Jimmy. Could he find work again?

But lucky for the fisherman, his nice captain suggested he apply for another job on the cape. The captain’s uncle was retiring as the lighthouse keeper, and with the captain’s recommendation, the job was his if he wanted it. The sailor knew of the importance of the lighthouse and quickly accepted the position. He would have to get used to being what sailors called a land lubber.
The Cape Lighthouse was a familiar landmark on the Atlantic Coast. It was a tall, circular tower with windows all around the top that would allow a huge light to send out a great beam to the ships on the seas. To mark the shore, the light would rotate in a half circle so it could be seen by boats up and down the coast. Of course, modern lighthouses are run by timer clocks and other digital advantages, but not too long ago in time, people were responsible for their important operation.
So, the one-time shipmate was proud to be named chief lighthouse keeper. It didn’t matter to him that he was the only one there. Except, of course, when he took a vacation and he
